Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Break Address Into Three Parts (if possible)

Is it possible to create an expression that would break up the following string into three fields:

    1234 Main Street Apt. 123

    Into:

    1234 / Main Street / Apt. 123

In my database, almost all of the street addresses have 4 numbers in them, and when an apartment number is entered, it almost always begins with "Apt."
I can deal with the few that are entered oddly.

I can also deal with multiple expressions if need be.

Unzip this table into a test workspace and look at the update operation.

Thanks for the quick response Al.

I downloaded and installed your table, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

I added a new address and made sure the record was accepted, but the three additional fields did not parse the first field.

I noticed there are no field rules assigned to the three new fields. Are they supposed to by any?

Run the operation - splitAddress - from the control panel.

If you open the operation in design mode, you can see the coding to split the address.

Yeah sorry about that. I had phones ringing and people parading in and out of my office while I was working on the download.

I guess I missed the part about the update operation.

However I tested it and it works like a champ!

          Many Thanks as always!!

That example is not meant to be the finished product, but an example of what can be done.

I'm not sure how you want this to work, but it should give you a jump start.

Re: Break Address Into Three Parts (if possible)

Al I'm back again with an additional question .....

As it turns out, most of the addresses in this database do not (after all) have a period in the "Apt. XX" section. As such, the expression is not removing the "Apt XX" whenever it is in the table without the period.

I tried modifying your expression by simply removing the period, but it didn't seem to make the "Apt XX" part parse out.

              Here's your expression:
              if(word(Address,2,"Apt.")>"","Apt."+word(Address,2,"Apt."),"")

              Here's what I tried:
              if(word(Address,2,"Apt")>"","Apt"+word(Address,2,"Apt"),"")

Could you possibly advise me on how to modify this so it will work correctly?

              Thanks again,
              Rich

                Sure.

Send me an email with some sample addresses that you are using.

I don't want the data posted on the messageboard.

You also need to modify the Street expression to remove the period from Apt

                  Street expression should be:

                  word(word(Address,2," ",9),1,"Apt")
