Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    List scrolling problems - sometimes

Another "has anyone had this experience, and know how to solve it?" :

I have a List control of a few thousand companies. The companies are assigned to divisions, so the user can choose a division before I display the list of companies filtered for the selected division.

Scrolling of the Company list is great for most of the divisions, but for 2 of them, scrolling doesn't work at all and a third only sometimes. Any attempt to scroll has no effect at all.

This problem so far as I've found only exists only on the iPhone, but it does not exist on an iPad or any desktop browser we've tried (several). I'm still trying to get an Android device test.

One of the lists that doesn't scroll is only about 25 records long, another is about 120 records long, and those that do work are often a couple hundred records long or more. For various reasons I'm not paginating the list and all is OK, when they scroll.

I can't help you with WHY it is happening (though my first guess would be that it doesn't think the list is long enough to REQUIRE a scroll.)

However, I do have an Android device I can test it for you with!

Can't you just set the list to ALWAYS have a scroll bar no matter what?

Or is it more serious than just having or not having the scrollbar?

Re: List scrolling problems - sometimes

I test my application in several devices, android - ipad - iPhone, and even a nook. In all cases the best solution was to put teh list in a panel card and set it to FILL container. You can put panel headers and footers for anything you want above and below the list. I am curious, do the lists that are NOT consistently scrolling FILL the panel card? If so - then I am at a loss because as I said - so far it works as expected every time other than when there are lets say 3 records and they take up 99% of the viewable area so you try to scroll but it doesn't because they are technically all in view...

The list is on a panel card, fills the container, with a panel header above it that contains a controlbar.

One group that doesn't scroll has 25 records total. 5 of them are in view on the iPhone.

Keep in mind there are other filters for this list that are similar, and scroll just fine. Puzzling.

Don't know if it matters, but what is IN the list? Is it just company names or other data too? Could there be any strange data in the smaller company sets that is messing up the list?

I know I posted about this before: Try this -

Basically it adds scrolling to the panel card - might help might not but it worked for me at the time!

Charles' style settings make no difference.

I'm going to go through the data and see if I can spot anything out of the ordinary.

Larry asks an interesting question: How doe a list know if it's scrollable? There may be a property and method for this. Will also be looking at that.

I'm wondering is there is a special character in one of the company names that is being interpreted as code and causing a JavaScript error.

Well, if styling does NOT help and you cannot figure it out the only thing left do to is work around the issue by paginating the data to fit the area with pull for more!

Re: List scrolling problems - sometimes

I was going to paginate the data as part of a new approach. But, it's defined as static text so that it can be drawn from the data cache, so can't be paginated.

I've also reviewed the data very closely and don't spot any unusual characters that might be causing the problem.

Its not the list or UX it the device control for the panel.
