Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Need a little bit of help with creating a data export link.

Our police department provides the Washington Post and other local newspapers with a weekly list of crime reports. It used to be done by emailing them an excel spreadsheet, but now I have a simple A5W page that provides the information instantly.

    https://blds.info/hcpd/CrimeReportsNewsMediaView.a5w

They want to be able to download the data in a tab delimited format for inclusion in their newspaper "crimes" database from around the region, so I provided a button that allows a download of the data. But in order to do that they have to:

    1. Open the webpage.
    2. Click the "Export Data" button.
    3. Select the option to open the export or save it.
    4. Click the "Save As" option, and navigate to a place to save it in.

Is there a way I could create a URL that would jump directly to Step #4 above? (They don't really need to see the actual web grid.)

You could skip #2 for them by clicking the button automatically after the page has rendered.

But 3 and 4 are browser functions - I don't think you can bypass them.

Alternatively, instead of creating a grid, export the data yourself and instead of giving them a link to the grid, give them a link to the file.

Otherwise, seriously, if the newspaper can't make 4 clicks a day to get the data they want, they don't want the data all that badly ...

I agree with the 4 clicks, but they are dealing with about 50 different police organizations in the Washington, DC Metro area each week, and many of them provide a simple link to that week's data.

The data in the web grid comes from our Records Management System, so it's easy on my end, but I don't what to have to manually create a file for them each week.

Skipping Step #2 is a good start. How would I go about doing that? Obviously something has to trigger the download function as soon as the page is opened.

I'm not at my computer with Alpha until tomorrow.

It would actually be easier if this was a UX instead of a grid, because the UX has a javascript function to click a button.

If no one else chimes in, I'll send you the proper scripts and the proper client side events over the weekend.

And I'm not sure you would have to manually create the file. You should also be able to setup a recurring event to run a report that will export the file automatically. If you save the file to the same place every time, then you could create a link to that data.

You should browse the forum for a script to do that - or start a separate thread specifically titled - export excel file once per day automatically. I think that is what you REALLY want to do.

          Thanks Larry.

I agree, that does sound like the better way to go.

I will start searching the forum for answers.
