Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    functions disappeared - please help!

I've been working on a project and had a dozen or so functions, almost all of which were quite significant. After renaming a couple of obsolete functions, the names of them still exist but they're blank inside.

I'm pretty sure Alpha stores them somewhere in a text file but I can't for the life of me find it.

How can I get them back?

So, I think I've found them a really backward way. Perhaps something about the file that stores them is corrupt, but they continue to show up blank in the Code Editor. However, I right clicked on the name of one of them and selected "Convert filesystem dictionary into library" and when I open those files in a text editor, they're there. So I'll copy and paste them back in, I guess.

Relief. Hope this helps someone else.

If you are using the standard library to store scripts / functions / etc and they "disappear", that suggests the workspace data dictionary may be corrupted. These are the .alb, .alm,. alx files. A compact may clean up the dictionary. In some cases, just closing and restarting can solve a problem.

When you convert to the filesystem library, the scripts / function, etc are moved from the data dictionary to individual files in folders under an .A5lib folder. This is much more reliable as each one is in an individual file. These files can be backed up or copied and you don't have to compact as the workspace data dictionary is essentially empty. You can even move a function from one Workspace to another by just copying from one A5lib scripts folder to another. This method is also very useful if using source control as you can update one script or function in source.

If you were already using the filesystem, and the functions "disappeared", check the individual function files in a text editor. If they are there with correct content, that suggests the remaining data dictionary can't link to them, or Alpha Anywhere just ran out of memory and can't load them. If they exist as files, close and reopen Alpha Anywhere and they should be visible.

        Thanks so much, Jerry.

To clarify, they had "disappeared" when I re-opened the workspace.

Though I feel much, much better about storing them on the filesystem, I'm not going to take chances by testing it out. But I think I've noticed this happening when a function is renamed when they're not stored in the filesystem.

Curious why new workspaces don't default to using the filesystem--seems like 98% of use cases would benefit from it.
