Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Email_send works in working preview but not live preview or on the web?

    I have the code shown below in a grid, and when tested with working preview, it sends an email immediately. But if I switch to live preview or submit it over the web, no email gets sent. Any idea why?

    function BeforeValidateNewRecords as v (DataSubmitted as P, Args as p, PageVariables as p)
    with PageVariables

    DataSubmitted.DateEntered=date()
    DataSubmitted.TimeEntered=Time()
    email_send("[email protected]","HCPD","A New Repair Request Has Been Submitted.","","","",.F.,"","","")

    end with
    end function

        email_send("[email protected]","HCPD","A New Repair Request Has Been Submitted.","","","",.F.,"","","")
        i tested in live preview it works well,
        the only thing i notice you have one extra ""
        also since these are all optional you don't have to include them
        email_send("[email protected]","HCPD","A New Repair Request Has Been Submitted.") should work by itself.

          I removed that last set of quotation marks at the end, but I still can't get it to work from Live Preview, only from Working Preview.

          Not sure why.

            Why don't you have a look at
            email_smtp_open()
            email_smtp_send()
            This really works much better than the email_send() function.

              Frank I decided to try this function, but I get an error message at the beginning of the string:

              function BeforeValidateNewRecords as v (DataSubmitted as P, Args as p, PageVariables as p)
              with PageVariables

              L email_send_gmail([email protected] ,xxxxxxxxxx ,C to ,C from ,C subject ,C html_body ,C text_body [,C cc [,C bcc [,C attachments ]]])

              end with
              end function

              I'm still kind of feeling my way around this email sending stuff, and obviously I'm doing something wrong. I get an "Expected Value" error at the front of the string where it says:
              "L email_send_gmail." (I don't know what the "L" is there for, but if I leave it out, I get the same error.)

                Re: Email_send works in working preview but not live preview or on the web?

                L email_send_gmail([email protected] ,xxxxxxxxxx ,C to ,C from ,C subject ,C html_body ,C text_body [,C cc [,C bcc [,C attachments ]]])
                ...
                "L email_send_gmail." (I don't know what the "L" is there for, but if I leave it out, I get the same error.)
                "L" is the end result, such as true or false.
                so the construct will be
                result = email_send_gmail([email protected] ,xxxxxxxxxx ,C to ,C from ,C subject ,C html_body ,C text_body [,C cc [,C bcc [,C attachments ]]])
                then the result will be either true or false. then depending on that you can take action.

                edit:
                rich, just now ran a test with an editable grid and on working preview and live preview the email gets sent without any problem using the original email_send function you had when i clicked the submit button.
                while i acknowledge the difference in versions between yours and mine, i don't think the function was rewritten for version 12. so there is something else wrong.
                instead of changing to another function and still hunting for the result
                can you post a video or image of the grid construct so people can see.

                this is the code for beforeValidate event, that i used and it worked.
                Code:
                function BeforeValidateNewRecords as v (DataSubmitted as P, Args as p, PageVariables as p)
                with PageVariables
                debug(1)
                dim result as n
                DataSubmitted.date_entered = date()
                DataSubmitted.time_entered = time()
                dim msg as c = ""
                msg = msg + "Date Entered: " + DataSubmitted.date_entered + crlf()
                msg = msg + "Time Entered: " + DataSubmitted.time_entered + crlf()
                msg = msg + "as you can see, the message gets sent!"
                result = email_send("[email protected]","test",msg)
                end with
                end function
                and the result:
                https://www.screencast.com/t/8U3CmYOAHB

                edit: in addition i published and it works well after publishing too.

                  Here is the way I do it.
                  Code:
                  		dim pm as P
                  		dim ps as P
                  		if (email_smtp_open(ps, "Your_mailserver", 25, "user", "password")) then
                  			pm.to = cEmail
                  			pm.from = "email_from"
                  			pm.bcc = "email_bccc"
                  			pm.subject = "subject"
                  			pm.attachments = attachments
                  			pm.html_message = <<%html%
                  			<HTML>Email Message
                                           </HTML>%html%

                  			if email_smtp_send(pm, ps)
                  			        good message
                  			else
                  				bad message
                  			end if
                  		end if
                  		email_smtp_close(ps)

                    Boy I'm just having no luck at all. I used your settings and it sends fine in Working mode, but not when sent over the actual web page.
                    However, now when I try to run the Live Preview, I get this:

                    ScreenShot013.jpg

                    Not sure why, as I am using Port 443 on my server, not 8081.

                      Frank let me ask two questions:

                      1. I assume the quotes are removed, correct? Ex. if (email_smtp_open(ps, "Your_mailserver",) where "Your_mailserver" becomes smtp.gmail.com (with no quotes)

                      2. How does this configuration deal with SSL or TLS mail servers? Your example shows port 25, but I am using Gmail to send, and for the smtp port it needs to be 465/SSL or 587/TLS. Is there a way to enter that information?

                        No the quotes remain. I am not sure about gmail but I think you would just use whatever port number you need instead of 25.
