Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Convert Records to JSON format and display in a webpage

    interestingly, i watched the videos JSON explained from alpha and in the third video, when selwyn types ?json_ the popup code complete shows json_regenerate function, but in mine it does not and it is not recognized at all. i know those videos were targeted at version 11. so something not good in mine. that is okay. i don't use that function.
    thanks for reading

      Re: Convert Records to JSON format and display in a webpage

      The below works just fine for me Gandhi. But if I recall you're using version 11, and I'm betting there have been some changes especially related to JSON functions since then. Here's the entire content of an A5W page that does what I'd expect:

      Code:
      <%A5
       	dim cn as sql::Connection
      	dim rs as sql::ResultSet
      	sql = "select top 5 CategoryName, Description from Categories"
      	cn.open("::name::northwind")
      	cn.execute(sql)
      	rs = cn.ResultSet
      	txt = rs.ToJSONObjectSyntax()
      	cn.close()

      	txt = stritran(txt, crlf(), ",")
      	txt = strip_trailing_char(txt, ",")
      	txt = "[" + txt + "]"
      	txt = json_reformat(txt)
      	txt = stritran(txt, chr(10), "<br>")
      	txt = stritran(txt, " ", "&nbsp;")
      	?txt
      %>

        The code Selwyn provided is not working for me in the Live Preview, showvar is not recognized there. Steve code works perfectly.

          Selwyn used showvar because that works when building off the code tab, and he probably didn't take the time (understandably so) to put this onto a web page. Showvar is not a function to be used on a web server. I use showvar quite a bit - build the code on the code tab, use showvar to see the results, and then when you know it's all good, paste it into the web component.

            yes i am on version 11.
            i agree, there must be. i am glad to see this is working now.
            i managed to do the same manually without using that function:
            Code:
            <!DOCTYPE html>
            <html>
            <head>
            <meta name="generator" content="Alpha Five HTML Editor Version 11 Build 3381-4096">
            <!-- must use in order to make XP Themes render -->
            <meta HTTP-EQUIV="MSThemeCompatible" content="Yes" />
            <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge" />
            <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />

            <title></title>
            <style>
            <!--
            .line1 {
            padding-left:45px;
            }
            -->
            </style>
            </head>
            <body>
            <%a5
            dim cn as sql::Connection
            dim result as l = .f.
            dim sqlStatement as c
            dim txt as c
            dim rs as sql::ResultSet
            dim id as n
            dim brand as c
            dim description as c
            result = cn.Open("::Name::local_MYSQL")
            if result then
            	sqlStatement = "SELECT id, brand, description FROM inventory LIMIT 5"
            	result = cn.Execute(sqlStatement)
            	if result then
            		txt = "{\"items\" : [<br/>"
            		rs = cn.ResultSet
            		while rs.nextRow()
            		id = rs.data("id")
            		brand = rs.data("brand")
            		description = rs.data("description")
            		txt = txt + "<div class=\"line1\">{\"id\" :" + id + ",</div>"
            		txt = txt + "<div class=\"line1\">\"brand\" : \" " + brand + "\",</div>"
            		txt = txt + "<div class=\"line1\">\"description\" : \"" + description + "\"</div>"
            		txt = txt + "},"
            		end while
            		txt = strip_trailing_char(txt, ",")
            		txt = txt + "]}"
            		txt = strtran(txt, ",", ",<br/>")
            	end if
            cn.close()
            end if
            ?txt

            %>

            </body>
            </html>
            and the result:

            https://www.screencast.com/t/UiwLtp4Bbt

            i agree it is easier with that function, given time one can do, with alpha, almost anything.
