Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Extracting Viewbox Data?

    I am trying to get a data value out of a Viewbox so that I can use the result in a calculation.

    My Viewbox data returns a single numeric value from a filtered SQL query. Now I want to use that value in a UX calculation.
    But how do I get that data back out of the Viewbox for use in the UX?

    I've tried to test this with the following javascript on a button event, but the result is 'undefined'.

    Code:
    //Get a pointer to the viewBox control called Factor10MV. Assign the viewbox field {CalFactor} to variable 'factor'. Alert the result.
    var vb = {dialog.object}.getControl('Factor10MV');
    var factor = vb.state.calfactor;
    alert('Calfactor =' + factor);

    Re: Extracting Viewbox Data?

    I'm sure we'll all find and build better methods as we learn our way around the Viewbox.

    First, I'm finding it useful to name the data controls as such:

    Code:
    name= "{dialog.componentname}.V.R1.TXT_1"
    id= "{dialog.componentname}.V.R1.TXT_1"
    For a little more context, here's a full definition for one of my controls in a Viewbox that uses JSON data:

    Code:
    <input 	type="text"
    		name="{dialog.componentname}.V.R1.TXT_{Question_ID}"
    		id="{dialog.componentname}.V.R1.TXT_{Question_ID}"
    		class="text"
    		value="{Resp_Text}"
    >
    Then, to get the data back out:

    Code:
    var candidate = '{dialog.componentname}.V.R1.TXT_1';
    var elementExists = document.getElementById(candidate);
    if (elementExists != null) {
    	var _myvalue = {dialog.object}.getValue('TXT_1');
    	}
    Hope this helps.

        Thanks David but that still doesn't seem to work. When I try to alert() the result, it just gives undefined.
        I thought perhaps I needed to refresh the viewbox first, but that didn't work either.

        I'm wondering if the viewbox data has to be converted to a number? Is it really a character type?

          Well, if I do this:

          Code:
          var vb = {dialog.object}.getControl('Factor10MV');
          var factor = vb.data[0].CALFACTOR;
          var nfactor = Number(factor);
          alert('Calfactor = ' + nfactor);
          It returns not a number

            Can you copy the ViewBox control into a new UX and post it? I want to see how the ViewBox is set up for getting data.

              Thanks David,

              The data is coming from a filtered SQL query. Here's the Viewbox in a UX ...

                I think you'll find success if you match your data property case to your fieldname case...

                Code:
                var factor = vb.data[0].CalFactor;

                    Re: Extracting Viewbox Data?

                    Hi guys. This is what I was looking for. Thanks!

                    But....

                    I'm trying to pull data from a Nested SQL Query.

                    Here's my code
                    Code:
                    var vb = {dialog.object}.getControl('viewbox2');
                    var itemsid = vb.data[0].ORDERITEMS_ID;
                    alert('Item ID = ' + itemsid);
                    The viewbox is viewbox2, pulling the data from a field ORDERITEMS_ID from a nested SQL query table with Query name of 'orderItems'. Pulling data from the first SQL query is no problem. Any nested gives the result of 'undefined'.

                    How do I specify to get the value from the nested query 'orderItems'?

                        Re: Extracting Viewbox Data?

                        As an example:
                        1) Let's say your second level query is named "Child_1" in the Nested query builder.
                        2) In your viewbox layout you have a section for the second query that is enclosed by the tags: {Child_1} and {/Child_1}
                        3) In your JavaScript you refer to data from your first query like:

                        ???.data[zerobased_row_index_for_main_query].fieldname1

                        4) To refer to fields from second query:
                        ???.data[zerobased_row_index_for_main_query].Child1[zerobased_row_index_for_subquery].subfieldName1

                        Replace "???" with whatever you are using to get to the data array for the list. I use local namespace functions defined inside the LIST object, so I use "this" in place of the "???".

                        You have to be careful and check the value of "???.data[?].Child1.length" if it is zero then do not try to access any fields from the subquery - they won't exist because there is nothing there.

                        Working...
