Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Refreshing Parent UX Cascading Dropdown

    OK, here's a fun one...

    I have a UX with cascading dropdowns (First you select Company. Then, you pick the "Contact")... You can see what it looks like here:
    It's working perfectly, but here's my challenge. As you can see, there's a button to add another contact. Clicking that button opens a simple grid (Modeless Popup, linked to the customer that was already selected in the first dropdown) where the user can add as many contacts as they want for that customer.

    If they add a new "contact", I want the cascading list to show the new contacts that were added, so that the user can select it.

    I've added this javascript in the "onhide" property of the window that opens (I tried to get the code to wipe out the Company Lookup, which the user would have to re-select... very cumbersome: I'd really just like the cascading Contact list to be refreshed)
    var po = {dialog.object}.getParentObject();
    po.setValue('COMPLOOKUP','');
    po.refresh();

    ... anyway, every variation I've tried isn't working.

    If you have any thoughts, I'd love to learn something new.

    Thanks.

    Phil

    Re: Refreshing Parent UX Cascading Dropdown

    I think you have to kind of fake this one out a bit. Get the current value of the Company dropdown. Then perform a refresh on the Contact dropdown but filter it with the current Company value. I don't know what your Company dropdown key is so I used CompanyId. Whatever is in the Contact dropdown for Company... use that.

    Edit: I usually test code I post but I didn't this time. Lesson learned... again. The onHide event is running from the UX... not from the Grid. There is no reason to go after a parent object. This code is tested and works from the onHide event

    Code:
    var currDDValue = {dialog.object}.getValue('Company');
    var arr = [];
    arr.push({ controlName: 'Contacts', dynamicFilter: 'CompanyId = \'' + currDDValue + '\''});
    var json = JSON.stringify(arr);
    {dialog.Object}.refreshDropdownBoxChoices(json);
    If you were to select a new Company to work with, the cascading dropdown stuff would now kick in and all is still good.

      Re: Refreshing Parent UX Cascading Dropdown

      HI David-

      Thanks so much for responding... I just have to become more skilled in javascript.

      Anyway, the code you sent caused an error (I'm sure it's something I entered incorrectly... though it appears ok to me).

      First: The first "dropdown" control is called "CompLookup" and the second, cascaded dropdown control is "Contact". The linking variable is "Company". Based on your suggestion, here's what I entered:

      var po = {dialog.object}.getParentObject();
      var currDDCompany = po.getValue('COMPLOOKUP');
      var arr = [];
      arr.push({ controlName: 'Contact', dynamicFilter: 'Company' = \'' + currDDCompany + '\''});
      var json = JSON.stringify(arr);
      po.refreshDropdownBoxChoices(json);

      When I try to save the code, I get this error:

      Like I said, I'm sure I'm entering something wrong, but I can't figure it out... It seems that the code doesn't like the "Contact" control, but I'm not sure.

      Thanks again for helping.

      Phil

        One more thing... since the error said that it was on line 4 column 63... that's where the "single quote" was for Company. So, I eliminated the single quotes, but the function doesn't appear to do anything. Hope that helps.

          Sorry Phil, my mistake on the parent stuff... re-read my post because I've changed the code there. You don't need to access a parent object from where you are. The onHide is running from the UX... not the Grid... so all code is UX based. Dump that code I originally posted and put in the new stuff.

            Hi David-

            I can't believe you felt the need to apologize... you are so generous to offer your time to help those of us who are still learning (especially javascript.. I have a long way to go). I am so appreciative of the you and the Alpha Community who is always there to step in and help.

            Anyway, your revised code worked perfectly, EXACTLY what I wanted to accomplish. I've already uploaded it to the server, so that my customer can test it.

            THANK YOU so much.
