Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Setting current time in a field using a button

    I want to set the current time in a field using a button. I have a field called CurrentTime and a field called Time.

    I know I can set the button as follows
    Code:
    {dialog.Object}.setValueFrom('Time','CurrentTime' );
    and then set the CurrentTime field with a default value of '=Time()'

    But that pulls the time that the component was loaded. So if the user hangs out on the page for a few minutes and then decides to hit Submit, it's not the true current time. What would I use to pull the actual time submitted? I've tried adding the =Time() to a

    Code:
    {dialog.Object}.setValue('Time',=Time())
    code but can't get it to work.

    Re: Setting current time in a field using a button

    if you want to record the time the submit button is pressed to the back end database, you are better off doing it in the afterdialogValidate function( it may be called just dialogvalidate in version 12)
    just before you have the savethedata add this line you will be set to go.
    e.dataSubmitted.time = Time()

    if for some reason it does not save just add it to the dirty column list.

    ps: you can even hide the field from the people if you like.
    thanks for reading

      David... you haven't specified what format you need... but this should help get you started.

      This grabs the current datetime and uses .toFormat() to create any date, datetime, time string you need. The inline doc on .toFormat() is quite helpful.

      Code:
      var currDate = new Date();
      var currDateStr = currEnd.toFormat('MM-dd-yyyy 0h:0m am');
      {dialog.Object}.setValue('End_Time',currDateStr);
      Also be aware of "where" you are getting the current datetime. Client-side and Server-side could be different.

        Great! That gave me a new idea. Thanks, David.

        But you have a typo for anyone coming by and using this.

        Code:
        var currDate = new Date();
        var currDateStr = currDate.toFormat('0h:0m am');
        {dialog.Object}.setValue('Start_Time',currDateStr);
        That's the format that worked for me, but you had line 2 with currEnd.toFormat and it should have been currDate.toFormat

          I should never change working code within a post... thanks for that, David.

            Re: Setting current time in a field using a button

            One other thing that I can't figure out for the life of me is this Date field. Here's my code.

            Code:
            var currDate = new Date();
            var currDateStr = currDate.toFormat('0h:0m am');
            {dialog.Object}.setValue('Start_Time',currDateStr);

            var d1 = {dialog.Object}.getValue('DATE');
            var st1 = {dialog.Object}.getValue('START_TIME');
            var et1 = {dialog.Object}.getValue('END_TIME');
            var st2 = {dialog.Object}.getValue('START_TIME2');
            var et2 = {dialog.Object}.getValue('END_TIME2');
            var pr1 = {dialog.Object}.getValue('PAYRATE');
            var dt1 = new Date(d1+st1);
            var dt2 = new Date(d1+et1);
            var dt3 = new Date(d1+st2);
            var dt4 = new Date(d1+et2);
            total = ((dt2.getTime() - dt1.getTime())/(1000*60))/60;
            total2 = ((dt4.getTime() - dt3.getTime())/(1000*60))/60;
            roundtotal = Math.round(total*100)/100;
            roundtotal2 = Math.round(total2*100)/100;
            paycalc = (roundtotal + roundtotal2) * pr1;
            roundpaycalc = Math.round(paycalc*100)/100;
            {dialog.Object}.setValue('TOTAL_TIME', (roundtotal + roundtotal2));

            {dialog.object}.submit();
            So what's happening here is the user is clicking a button to "Clock In". It inserts the current time in the 'START_TIME' or whichever, then adds up the 4 in and out fields and gives a total in another field 'TOTAL_TIME' of their hours for the day and then commits it back to the database. This is dependent on the DATE field which for some reason needs to be dirty. If I select the date and then hit 'Clock In' button, everything calculates fine. If you go back to the record and just click 'Clock Out', it will not do the calculation unless I re-select the date. I've tried to do the e.dirtyColumns in the Server Side dialogValidate but that doesn't seem to work.

            How would I make that dirty each time the user comes back to that record?
