Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    afterDialogValidate Server-Side Event Question

    Within the afterDialogValidate event is there a method I could use to detect if a new record was just saved?

    What I need to do is perform a separate SQL insert but only after a new record has been saved. That insert also needs the primary key of that new record to use in an argument.

    I came up with this for my save button but quickly realized how poor a method it is ...

    Code:
    var _id = {dialog.object}.getValue('ID');

    if (_id.length > 1){
    	//Exisiting Record
    	{dialog.object}.submit();
    } else {
    	//New record
    	{dialog.object}.submit();

    	//Timeout for save to finish
            setTimeout(function(){
    		{dialog.object}.ajaxCallback('','','Save_New_Record','','');
    	}, 3500);
    }
    I know I could do this in a SQL trigger but I'm trying to avoid that.

    [click on the actionJavascript to show the variables exposed it will show the flag and the primary key]
    yes, after the action javascript you can enter this comman
    if rtc_flag_record_was_saved then ' the record was saved

    do what you needs to do

    end if

    the primary key will be there
    the exact code is in the example if you do click to see the variables, that you can use it.

        Re: afterDialogValidate Server-Side Event Question

        Mike, I have very little experience with SQL. The one app where I do use SQL, I have this code in the afterDialogValidate event. Debug(1) will show what is returned. You can edit the last line which is action javascript and there is a built in feature to do what you want.

        Code:
        function afterDialogValidate as v (e as p)
        	debug(1)
        	e.datasubmitted.site = upper(e.datasubmitted.site)
        	e.datasubmitted.tail = upper(e.datasubmitted.tail)
        	e.datasubmitted.descript = w_upper(e.datasubmitted.descript)
        	e.datasubmitted.notes = w_upper(e.datasubmitted.notes)
        	e.datasubmitted.intials = upper(e.datasubmitted.intials)
        	e.datasubmitted.TimeStamp = TIME("MM-dd-yy, h:0m", NOW() )

        	dim cn as sql::Connection
        	dim flag as l
        	cnString = "::Name::AF_WOLog"
        	table = "wo_log"

        	flag =cn.Open(cnString)
        	if flag = .f. then
        		e.javascript = "alert('Sorry, Unable to Open Table');"
        		end
        	end if

        	cn.PortableSQLEnabled=.t.
        	dim args as sql::Arguments
        	args.Set("ThisSite",e.datasubmitted.site)

        	dim sqlstatement as c
        	sqlstatement=<<%sql%
        SELECT MAX(wo)
        FROM wo_log
        WHERE site=:ThisSite
        %sql%
        	flag=cn.Execute(sqlstatement,args)
        	if flag = .f. then
        		e.javascript = "alert('Sorry, Unable to Execute Process');"
        		cn.Close()
        		end
        	end if

        	dim rs as sql::ResultSet
        	rs=cn.ResultSet
        	nr=rs.nextrow()
        	if nr = .f. then
        		xd="0"
        	else
        		xd=rs.data(1)
        	end if
        	e.datasubmitted.wo = alltrim(str(val(xd)+1))
        	cn.close()

        	'e.javascript = "alert(" + e.datasubmitted.wo + ");"

        	'To edit this action, place insertion point anywhere in the command, then click the 'Action Scripting' button'.
        	ExecuteServerSideAction("Save Data::Save_Submitted_Data_to_WO_LOG_Table")

        end function

          Thanks guys. I found the e object I need: e.rtc.primaryTablePrimaryKey

          I debugged the ExecuteServerSideAction("Save Data::Save_Submitted_Data_to_Table_s_") specifically looking for such a thing but apparently didn't notice it until Gandhi replied.

            https://www.screencast.com/t/g73PXW0B8

            this is the variable and the primary key
            these are exposed via
            this step
            https://www.screencast.com/t/PftTCIjMYKQ

            the disadavantage of using Max(id) is that if someone else saves a record you will get wrong data, in this step you do not. all connection strings will get their primary key as receipt regardles of how many connections to the backend.

              Re: afterDialogValidate Server-Side Event Question

              What my script is doing, it's creating a new Work Order number after a submit. The table contains work order numbers for multiple locations. The work order number is sequential for each location. After the submit, the next work order number is determined by finding the highest number filtered by that location and then incremented by 1. It is possible that all locations have the exact same work order number. The work order number also has an alphabet code attached to define the location. So I can have BAF-10123 and ORH-10123.

              I'm not sure what the key value would do for me.

              Thank you for your concern.

                Re: afterDialogValidate Server-Side Event Question

                okay now it is clear that you create an unique id, the key value will not offer any improvement since it only returns autoincrement id and an integer value.
