Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to use the validateContainer function?

    I have a group of fields that I open in a pop-up window. The values of these fields need to be validated before they close the window, however I don't want to validate the entire form yet. I was searching through the javascript that is loaded on my .a5w page, and I found a function called validateContainer. This function would be perfect for my needs, because all the fields that I need to validate are already in a container.

    This is the function:

    Code:
    validateContainer:function(containerId) {
    	var onSuccess=typeof arguments[1]!='undefined'?arguments[1]:'none';
    	var onFailure=typeof arguments[2]!='undefined'?arguments[2]:'none';
    	var onSuccessSS=typeof arguments[3]!='undefined'?arguments[3]:'none';
    }
    Unless I'm just not understanding what this function does, or how to use it, it doesn't seem like it does anything other than instantiate some local variables. Is there any way for me to use this function (or any, for that matter) to validate only a specific set of fields, rather than the whole form?

    Thanks!

    Do you mean that you want to validate data in specific Controls in a databound UX Component when submitting that Component?

      Re: How to use the validateContainer function?

      More like I want to run the validation (either Javascript or Xbasic, either one would work) on specific controls without submitting the whole component. I want to validate the controls separately so it won't say there are validation errors in other controls that haven't been touched yet, to avoid any messiness.

      If it makes any difference, most of the controls on this UX component are bound to fields in an SQL table, but the ones that I want to validate separately are not. Instead I compile the values of these components into a JSON string, and set a control to the value of that JSON string, then save that to the server.

        Still not quite sure what you want... but maybe this. You can turn on "Validation rules" in the property of a control. Read the in-line doc for this... as well and have a look at the "Validation and Error Reporting" section in the UX properties.

        Once you turn on a Control's Validation rules, you can call a validation method in Javascript for that control. On a button, for example you could do this...

        Code:
        var validationResult={dialog.object}.clientSideValidateField('text1',1,1);
        var validationResult={dialog.object}.clientSideValidateField('text2',1,1);

        if({dialog.Object}._eh._e.length > 0){
        	return;
        }
        This will check Controls "text1" and "text2" for whatever Validation rules have been set up. Then the dialog.Object error handler property is checked. If there are errors then we just exit the code.

          Sorry for the delayed response. That function worked for what I was trying to achieve.

          Out of curiosity, is there anywhere where that clientSideValidateField is documented? I haven't seen that function on their documentation or in the program itself (through autocomplete or anything of the sort). I've seen a couple times now where there are functions that perfectly suit my needs that I randomly find through other means, but am completely unable to find any documentation or mention of them anywhere in the program.

          Thanks for the help!
