Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Mobile App Android error "Unfortunately app has stopped"

I have a mobile app that installs and works well on iOS devices (iPhone/iPad), but after installing on an Android device, I get a error message immediately after trying to open the app. Error message is "Unfortunately [myappname] has stopped. The only info I can find on this error says to clear storage and cache which I did and the problem persists. Also, when I check the app in the devices settings, it says the app is 32mb which seems excessively large to me

    Questions
    1) does anyone have any pointers or suggestions where I can debug this error further ?
    2) is a 32mb app reasonable ?

App is deployed in PhoneGap and installed on device via QR code and isn't in the Google Play store yet

    Thanks, Dave

Re: Mobile App Android error "Unfortunately app has stopped"

I have now spent over 30 hours trying to resolve this error and have run out of ideas (plus hair, patience and sanity)
    android error.JPG

Only happens on Android devices - iOS is fine
Log file from the PG portal looks good, build and verification report as successful
Manually added 3 lines to the config.xml and added the extra meta tag as detailed in the Cordova documentation for the whitelist
Re-signed the app just to make sure I hadn't made a mistake in that step

I even downloaded the Alpha Conference sample app and compared the config.xml and index.html files to mine and found no differences. While I was at it, I installed the conference app on my Android device just to make sure nothing was wrong with the device. The conf app installed and works fine outside of the Google Play Store

Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated. I have gone through a ton of the PhoneGap and Cordova documentation and believe I have covered all the bases. Google searching this error only yields advice about clearing the devices cache (which I did to no avail). It's puzzling to get such a generic error message that I haven't been able to reference to anything, especially since builds for Android is supposed to be easier/simpler than iOS

    Alpha build 4119_4825
    PhoneGap version cli-6.3.0
Mobile app install from QR code generated in PG Build (same results whether I use the QR code from PG built into Alpha, or from the PG portal)

Send me the QR Code and I'll test an install.

Same error here. The download filesize doesn't seem right... it's 2.90Mb. Even my barebones, quick test only apps are around 5Mb. The installed app is using 7.21Mb of storage. Again, even my smallest, test only apps are almost that size. It seems that there's something missing in your build.

If you want to PM me and send me your email address... I'll email and then you can send along the full project if you want. I'll try a build.

Re: Mobile App Android error "Unfortunately app has stopped"

Dave, I've sent you a new PhoneGapBuild folder. The app builds, installs, and runs successfully. I created a new PhoneGap Build project and kept making changes to it which matched your original PGB project. There are a couple of items I left which I emailed you about... an Index HTML Meta Tag and some other items in the config.xml file. I don't think they made the app fail, so put them back after you get a successful build.

David, creating a new PG Build project led to Success !

I can’t thank you enough. I was hunting down every little setting, comparing files, examining the apk output from PG after building and so on and so on. Never occurred to me the fix would be a complete refresh of the build. Your contribution to the Alpha community is awesome

Re: Mobile App Android error "Unfortunately app has stopped"

Excellent to hear. The download filesize just seemed so odd... it was under 3Mb. A new UX with just a control was larger than that... so something was off. Then I used the suspected PGB Project with a new UX and it failed so that narrowed down the culprit. After removing all the suspected bits from the project and having it still fail pointed to the project itself being bad. Thankfully, building a new project is easily done.

Did your HTML Meta Tag and other config.xml items go back in ok?

Re: Mobile App Android error "Unfortunately app has stopped"

Yes, the additional meta tag and 3 lines in the config work while testing the app - iOS and Android. I have not gotten the app submitted to the App Stores yet so I won't know for sure until I get to that point (assuming I ever get that far)
