Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Setting up a keyword search

Larry, you're mis-understanding the ideas behind 2 Search concepts in the Grid.

    1. Search Properties : "Show single 'Keyword' search field.

    2. Fields to Search In : "Keyword search"

These are 2 completely different ideas and areas. You do not want #2... but you are concentrating only on #2. #2 is useful when you are showing one or more Search Input fields... and you want to fine tune a keyword search across several other grid fields that are showing. E.g. You're showing a Search Input field for Firstname, but you also want to search Lastname at the same time for the same value. Both fields must be showing in the grid.

#1 is what you want... but you are throwing #2 into the mix and confusing things. You do not want to set up "Keyword search" within "Fields to Search In". So... turn all that off.

Instead, go to Search Properties and turn on the "Show single 'Keyword' search field" property. The description for this property reads...

Instead of showing individual search fields, show a single search field. If a match is found in any of the search fields, the record is returned.
Read this carefully and understand what it says. This shows a single search input and searches across all fields you have in your "Fields to Search In". There's nothing more you need to do.

Re: Setting up a keyword search

That doesn't work for me in this situation.

If I just did a keyword search and nothing else, the user would come up with thousands of records for most searches.

I also want to search by a date range and other fields AT THE SAME TIME.

So I need a date range, a couple of other specialized fields AND a keyword search.

Just showing a single search field won't give me all that.

And, as I've said previously, I can't setup the keyword search the way I need to in the basic grid search.

Re: Setting up a keyword search

Ok... thanks... understood now... you don't want to, and can't, use the Grid Keyword search. I didn't know until now that you wanted to do a date range search, specific fields search, and a keyword search, all at the same time.

You should have a look at the Server-side Event... OnSearchPartFilterCompute... see if that helps.
