Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to create multiple instance of Alpha server

    Hi,

I am using Alpha since last year. I have lots of server crash issues during this period. When the work load on the system is high, it crashes daily, or more than one times a day. I have to restart WAS manually. I am exploring through the alpha forum about the issue. Some of the alpha experts suggested to create multiple application server instances and use Always Up.Before installing the Always Up script, I want to know if there any compatibility issues with other functionalities of the system like emailing, printing reports etc. Also please can anyone tell me that how can I create multiple instance of application server? I am using Windows server 2012 R2.
    your help will be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Rajen

Re: How to create multiple instance of Alpha server

You can install the app server multiple times on the same machine (into different directories).

Each instance must then run in it's own port. (Port 80, 81, 82 etc.)

When choosing the ports, make sure you aren't conflicting with software that needs to use those ports.

All instances will use the same email and report settings.

If you update the app server, you must update each instance separately.

When connecting to the server, unless you are on port 80 or 443, you must specify the port number you are using ie:

    localhost:82//myapp

Or use a load balancer or something to figure out the port for you. (Not my forte - someone else can chime in on that part)

I don't know that you need to update each instance because I run two instances; one on port 80 and one on port 443 and I do not update separately I just run the update and restart - both update.

Re: How to create multiple instance of Alpha server

I have always done it by simply installing the server twice, into two separate directories.

That is why I need to patch twice.

I never saw the Alphapedia article explaining how to do it from the same install.

Guess I'll have to try that sometime!

Thanks GGandhi. Your informations are so helpful. I will consult with my server technician. I hope this will help me to solve server outage issue.

Thanks larry. I hope it will reduce workload over the website and solve outage issue. Its weird that alpha server gets down middle of the business day. I don't use Alwaysup. I have heard lots of positive reviews about the script but few doubts with it. Please let me know how much its effective.

Re: How to create multiple instance of Alpha server

Always up is simply a program that allows you to load an executable as a service, so that it will start automatically when the server starts.

It also has some other cool features. For instance, you can set it up to email you if the server goes down or if it detects an issue.

It can also automatically restart the service under certain circumstances.

It is inexpensive and it works.

I use "AlwaysUp" myself and recommend it. Easy setup and forget it. Although, if you want to actually see and configure your server setup you will need to "Run all in this instance" otherwise the alpha server and anything else is run as a service or something similar so you cannot see it running in the notification area like normal.

Re: How to create multiple instance of Alpha server

I have setup a server with two config.xml files.

                    They run fine manually.

But I am trying to setup the second server instance in always up and it won't start. I can't seem to get it to understand how to load the configfile with the application.

It starts, but then says it's waiting.

The server that is not using a custom config file starts up fine.

How do I get always up to run the second one properly?

Do they both start up normally? If so always up should have issue. I run two with separate config files and all works as expected so keep working on it because it should work fine.

What do you have on the first screen of your always up configuration? I've tried several different combos and can't get it to run.

If I run manually, it works fine.

Re: How to create multiple instance of Alpha server

Larry, I've been doing this for years, (currently running 7 instances) so my information may be old, but one thing to try is to have alwayup put a delay between the startups. I space my startups by about 2 minutes. On the "Startup" tab use the Pause for 120 seconds on the second instance.

This isn't a startup issue. I am just trying to turn it on within Always up at all.

I all really need is an example of what the command structure should look like.

                            In a shortcut, it is

                            "executablepath\alphanywhere.exe" - configfile="configfilepath\config.xml"

But you can't put the extra properties into the same line as the executable, and it won't start if I put in the configfile parameters.

All I want to see is what someone else has for these two things in Always Up.
