Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: How to create multiple instance of Alpha server

I made no changes in the settings of either instance that I can think of. One thing I do ALOT is "restart all in this session" so I can actually see and configure the instances of the servers running.

The config for the alpha server is setup in the settings of the alpha server NOT always up, so you just ask it to load the shortcut to the instance. Each instance of the Alpha server will call it's own config.

Re: How to create multiple instance of Alpha server

        Mine is:
        Application
        C:\Program Files (x86)\a5V12 ApplicationServer\A5ApplicationServer.exe

        Arguments
        -ConfigFile=d:\a5v12\a5config\A5V12Config_80.xml

As you can see, I've moved my config files to a place much more handy. I've also moved the logs into d:\a5v12\a5logs

I don't know if it is necessary, but I name my config files individually, such as A5V12Config_80.xml for port 80 and A5V12Config_81.xml for port 81. I also give each port it's own session folder, like
session_folders for 80 and session_folders-81 for port 81. Keeps everything clean and I can see which ports are being heavily used.

          Thank you all,

Charles, I see that you are actually running the shortcuts directly, not putting the executable into Always up.

          That worked fine for me.

Glad I could help, btw I do the same thing as Pat and have my config files named differently as well.

When choosing the ports, make sure you aren't conflicting with software that needs to use those ports.

All instances will use the same email and report settings.

If you update the app server, you must update each instance separately.

When connecting to the server, unless you are on port 80 or 443, you must specify the port number you are using ie:

              localhost:82//myapp

Or use a load balancer or something to figure out the port for you. (Not my forte - someone else can chime in on that part)
Hi Larry, i'm wondering if i install the app server multiple times, do i activate it with same license or with a new one ?

Re: How to create multiple instance of Alpha server

You can install it up to 4 times on the same server and it will automatically use the same activation code. You only have to activate it once in any one of the Alpha server instances.

Re: How to create multiple instance of Alpha server

There is no need to install the Application Server multiple times on the same machine. While you can, it is not a best practice because it significantly complicates upgrades and maintenance.

The best option is to use the Application Server for IIS, which makes it quite simple to host multiple applications and sites.

The next best option is to install the Application Server just once and then create configuration files for each instance that you need. This is documented at https://www.alphasoftware.com/docume...on%20Files.xml
