Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to Save/log the user who changed the list detail?

    I have a list with a detail view and I want to save the user name and a time stamp into the database. How do I do this please?

    Many thanks

    I forgot to say that this is in a UX component.

      You could do something like this in the UX Server Side afterDialogValidate event.

      Code:
      e.dataSubmitted.CreateUser = a5ws_GetCurrentUser()
      e.dataSubmitted.CreateDate = now()
      e.dirtyColumns = e.dirtyColumns + crlf()+ "CreateUser" + crlf() + "CreateDate"
      ExecuteServerSideAction("Save Data::Save_Submitted_Data")

        Hi iRadiate and thank you for your suggestion. I have just tried that and it did nothing. I am not even sure if this event is triggered.

          Adam is right, that event doesn't fire in this case.

          Here's an example of one way to create this information: I have a table named Activities, and a list with the usual controls to add new activities.

          In the list / detail properties / table properties / server-side events, add "AfterInsert" (without the quotes) to the After Insert event. Then create this Xbasic function in your UX:

          Code:
          function AfterInsert as v (e as p)
          	dim args as sql::Arguments
          	dim Pkey as n
          	pKey = e.primaryKeyValue
          	if (pKey > 0) then
          		sql = <<%a%
          			Update Activities
          			set Created_when = :now
          			, created_by = :who
          			WHERE Id = :ID
          		%a%
          		args.set("now", now())
          		args.set("who",  session.UserRecordName)
          		args.set("ID", pKey)
          		e.cn.execute(sql, args)
          	end if
          end function
          Your fields and variables may vary -- I keep the user identification in session.UserRecordName for instance for this particular application though the user ID is often more appropriate.

            Or you could be way more elaborate and keep a change log table using the same (or more) information. I do this to track logins for instance. You can also then create a report of edits or activity of the user - so many ideas...I remember trying to get the pk in much more difficult way - this works great.

              Hi Steve,

              Thank you for your suggestion, but how do I get the user name in the first place. I understand you are storing it in a session variable, but I am having trouble getting it out to start with to even populate the session variable.

              Many thanks

                Yey. It works! I used Steve suggestion and had to tweak it, but got it working in the end. Thank you

                Code:
                function AfterUpdate as v (e as p)
                	'this is called from the list, table properties, afterUpdate
                	dim args as sql::Arguments
                		sql = <<%a%
                			Update customer
                			set amended_on = :now
                			, amended_by = :who
                			WHERE cu_code = :ID
                		%a%
                		args.set("now", now())
                		args.set("who",  a5ws_GetCurrentUser())
                		args.set("ID", e.arguments.find("primarykey_1").Data )

                		e.cn.execute(sql, args)
                end function

                  Yet another way. I get the user ID and the users IP in the login page and pass it on to all of the components as an argument. Then in each ux component I use the client-side canSubmitDialog event and set the lastuid field value there.
                  Code:
                  {dialog.Object}.setValue('lastuid',{dialog.Object}.argumentValue('arLastUID'),true);
