Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Reset an Edit-Combo Control in a Detail View

    I have a list control in a UX. The list has a detail view, and one of the detail view controls is an edit-combo control.

    There is one particular value in the edit-combo list that if chosen by a user, I need to reset the edit combo back to its prior value, and display a message explaining why that value is not allowed.

    This will reset the detail view if executed with a button on the UX:
    Code:
    var lObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('DOCSMGRLIST');
    lObj.resetForm({prompt: false});
    But if I fire this in the onChange of the edit-combo or afterSelect event in the edit-combo builder, it will reset the value, but then the edit-combo reverts to the undesired value.

    I thought this was a timing issue, but a setTimeout(function() does not make a difference.

    So I am looking for the right way to do this.

    There are a couple of places to get the original value of a control... this one looks pretty good. In the onChange event of the Edit-Combo...

    Code:
    var currValue = this.value;
    var origValue = {dialog.Object}.originalValues[0].COMPANY;
    if(currValue=='TheSelectionYouDoNotWant'){
    	alert('cannot use that one');
    	{dialog.Object}.setValue('COMPANY',origValue,false);
    }

      Doesn't want to work for me.... The edit-combo control is named DocType

      Code:
      var origValue = {dialog.Object}.originalValues[0].DocType;
      alert(origValue);
      Returns "Undefined"

          even though i do not have version 12, i am just curious. in version 11 there are functions like canInsert canUpdate etc.,
          don't you have a function like that canUpdate in the detail view. there you can return false if the entered data equals to something that you do not want and it should revert back to the original.
          is that not possible?
          curiosity doesn't hurt, i think. i could be wrong on that.

            Re: Reset an Edit-Combo Control in a Detail View

            The upper case made a difference. It now gets the original value, and it sets the value in the detail view edit-combo field.

            But it does not save the original value. It saves the new value "Customer Invoice", which is the value I don't want to allow.

            Code:
            var currValue = this.value;
            var origValue = {dialog.Object}.originalValues[0].DOCTYPE;

            if(currValue=='Customer Invoice'){
            //	alert('cannot use that one');
            	{dialog.Object}.setValue('DOCTYPE',origValue,false);
            }

            I will take a look at the canUpdate events, but I also need to display a message, rather than just not update.

              Re: Reset an Edit-Combo Control in a Detail View

              I'm not seeing that behaviour at all. How can a value be saved in a control... if that control has a different value. You can change the .setValue statement and set the "dirty" parameter to true...

              Code:
              {dialog.Object}.setValue('DOCTYPE',origValue,true);
              Using false, I didn't see a need to dirty the control if you're just setting it back to what it was.
              Maybe there's something else going on in your UX or setup you've not mentioned.

                It is a pretty simple UX. I will do some more troubleshooting tomorrow, and post the result.

                  true in the dialog.object set is to trigger onChange event. if the function is already on the onChange event i don't think true or false ( true is default) needed.
                  as far as i know. ( it is not to make it dirty or not)

                    I can't really see why your original idea doesn't work. This works well for me. Of course, you lose all other edits.

                    Code:
                    var currValue = this.value;
                    if(currValue=='Alpha'){
                    	alert('not allowed');
                    	var lObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('LIST1');
                    	lObj.resetForm({prompt: false});
                    }

                      here is something for you to try and see if this will not save the newly entered but erased value back to the database.
                      Code:
                      var currValue = this.value;
                      var origValue = {dialog.Object}.originalValues[0].DOCTYPE;

                      var j1 = document.getElementById("DLG1.V.R1.DOCTYPE"); // i am assuming the naming convention is same in version 12 - if not please adjust.

                      if(currValue=='Customer Invoice'){
                              alert('cannot use that one');
                      	{dialog.Object}.setValue('DOCTYPE',origValue);
                              j1.setAttribute("a5isdirty", "false");

                      }
                      this will reset that control only, i do not know if it will clear the ux/dialog back to not dirty based on this one control.

                        I made a test UX. doctype.zip

                        If I change the value in DocType to Customer Invoice, it puts the original value in the DocType control.

                        Then click anywhere on the UX, or save, and it changes to Customer invoice.

                          Ok... here's the difference... your Edit-Combo List is set to "User must select from list". This means we cannot write anything into the List ourselves... a choice must be made by dropping down the list and selecting. That's why it's being set back to what you selected... Customer Invoice.

                          That was a good one. Hold on for a work-around.

                            Here's the code for the onChange event of the Edit-Combo List... to check that it's not "Customer Invoice".

                            Code:
                            var currValue = this.value;
                            var origValue = {dialog.Object}.originalValues[0].DOCTYPE;

                            if(currValue=='Customer Invoice'){
                            	alert('not allowed');
                            	{dialog.Object}.setValue('DOCTYPE',origValue,false);
                            	//var lObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('LIST1');
                            	//lObj.resetForm({prompt: false});
                            }
                            And... in the Edit-Combo List... add this code to the OnNotInList event...

                            Code:
                            var origValue = {dialog.Object}.originalValues[0].DOCTYPE;
                            {dialog.Object}.setValue('DOCTYPE',origValue,false);
                            alert('you must select an item from the dropdown list');
                            And... uncheck "User must select from list".

                            Alpha lets us look after stuff quite nicely.
