Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Basic .a5w page construction

I am in the process of revamping my entire website. In the past I have always laid out my pages utilising hidden tables. I understand that this is not how the professionals do it. Is there a basic guide that will lead me through the options - I can't find one.

Many of my client pages are 'static'. Only the private login pages manage lots of data - and I don't really care how they look. It's my client pages that I want to make as professional as possible.

    Thanks for your help.

Have a play with this. I am sorry it is a mess but I am just beginning to think about how to do what I think you are discussing.

      Hi Michael,

Thanks for the help. I will give it a try today. I'll let you know how I get on.

I am surprised that I can't easily locate a video on web page setup/design. Lot's of help on adding components etc, but apparently nothing on the layout of attractive pages. I have been building pages for years, but I know that placing everything in tables is not how the educated do it. Hopefully the container route will be the answer.

      Many thanks,

      Larry

If you want to build pages 'from scratch' you need to familiarize with HTML / CSS. I do not think you will see a lot of Alpha Tutorials on this because HTML/CSS is more website development in general. Alpha is a tool you can use to build components that will generate html/css for you. But having a good grasp on HTML/CSS will allow you to customize further. In terms of not using hidden tables, a lot of modern website layouts are done using the div tags (see HTML Layouts link below). Recently other tags have been introduced that make the html look nicer semantically e.g. nav, header, footer. You could technically build pages in a component using UX's, containers, grids etc. but to get the exact look/feel that you want you may need to do some custom html/css work.

        HTML: https://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp
        CSS: https://www.w3schools.com/css/default.asp
        HTML Layouts:https://www.w3schools.com/html/html_layout.asp

If you want to practice you can just use notepad to create a mypage.html file (when you save it make sure you save it as [pagename].html. You can then double click this file to open it in a browser.
HTML/CSS is very robust so there is a lot to learn.

P.S tables are generally frowned upon for layout purposes, but if your data is truly tabular - semantically table tags are a good choice.
For layouts youd be looking into divs and placing them by floating etc.

        :) Good luck!

        Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice. I shall go and further study HTML and CSS. I do have a limited understanding already as I have published dozens of pages over the years, via Alpha. I think in the short term I will continue via the hidden table route, and then when I have gained sufficient knowledge I will move my pages to the div scenario.

            Many thanks

Simple Alpha containers are nothing really but DIVs. So I often use a lot of containers in Alpha. Containers within containers within containers.... To start to get a little more modern, simple containers within "flex" containers.

EDIT: Nevermind. I was thinking UX component and not a5w page
