Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

What database error are you getting... the nasty "Operation must use an updateable query"?

Re: Connection between DB and Phone when deploying with phonegap?

Just reading through this and having just figured out the PG stuff - it sounds like your DB and server are on your home machine and not accessible through the internet, so pointing your URL to C:drive/ any folder will not work.
If I misread that, read on.
If your just "testing" you can put your login UX on an a5w page and access it via any device, it will behave about the same and certainly for simple testing of login and what not.
So here has been my experience - like David said make sure your UX is set to always allowed, similar to any login page or component you cannot access it if it's behind the wall.

Think about a PG app like this - and this is a pretty east way to move about any web app using session vars to PG create your LOGIN UX (first panel) create a menu button client side visible set to dialogIsLoggedin = true in a control bar or a panel header.
Next make panel card 2 and put some buttons in it to move to other panels - the click action of the MENU will move to panel card 2 exposing the buttons.
Put existing components (set to allways allowed as well) into the other panels and delay render till visible - this will fire an ajax callback setting your session vars to filter your records by the user or whatever when the panel comes into view.

Again, this is a simple approach but works. The main idea being - set components to allways allowed because once the UX logs you in the "server" is not handling security the UX is - at least thats my understanding. In fact if you use an embedded component that is set to requires login you'll get kicked to your to your preset page in your security settings.

Lastly, again - if your your still building your app why not build it as a web app first? If your looking to use the phones hardware or PG plugins obviously they wouldn't work - but just to build basic functionality you could test in a browser first.

I don't think he's pointing his URL to his C:/drive. He's published to his C:/drive... and confirmed it's correct.

He's getting a database error... which means he's getting through... but not onto the database. Because he's using Access, this is a kind of a standard issue. I'd like confirmation of the error though.

When you say make the UX is set to always allowed. Where do you go to make that setting? I don't see anything in properties or doing a right click on the component file.

          Thanks

I was getting the "Operation must use updateable query". After I changed the URL (I realised I misspelled something), no errors show up anymore, but the database still isn't connecting.

I made an ajax callback button to see to test if the call is being made, and since nothing is alerting me, its not making any callbacks.

                  Hi David,

I fixed the issue this morning. I'm not entirely sure why, but once I switched to a MySQL server, the app works fine now. Didn't change anything else regarding PG such as ajax URL.

Thank you again for the help.

Re: Connection between DB and Phone when deploying with phonegap?

Good to hear. Just to finish this off... the issue you were having was because you were attempting write access to an Access database in the MDBFiles folder of your Alpha Install.

Normally, when you set up a database somewhere, you ensure its security allows read/write access... whether it's the actual database or a folder it's in.

To use the Northwind Access database you need to change the security of the MDBFiles folder... giving Users read/write access. If you don't... you get the "Operation must use an updateable query". Since Microsoft built all the pieces involved here (OS, Database, and Driver) of course they're going to give you message that will send you in a completely wrong direction.

Anyway, switching to MySQL took your read/write issue out of the equation... and it all worked because everything else you had set up was ok.
