Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RDP Guard problems?

I wonder if anyone else who is using RDP Guard can check that yours is still running correctly?

I have version 3-7-9 and it won't run for longer than about 2 minutes. RDP Guard is not responding (yet) to my emails. Is this just me / my configuration or do they have some other systemic problem?

Just open the UI for it on the desktop and see if the service is Stopped or Running.

    Thanks

I have that version installed on two servers and it is running without issue for me.

Thanks. They have really lousy customer service. Reading the tea leaves suggests to me that RDP Guard checks for a valid license about every 2 minutes - mine failed without fail that often. And I *think* that their sales person finally set it straight by re-registering our license numbers with their authorization computer. Or something like that. . . .

Better is use service provider that offers for free external firewall that can block unwanted traffic to all server ports. For example Amazon EC2 and Leaseweb has this service.

I do not know any reason why not use external firewall.

External firewalls are a must in today's environment. But they alone are not sufficient to handle all threats and are just one piece of a complete security solution. For example, one may have a business need to allow incoming Remote Desktop services to their server for remote administration. Because you may need to be able to do remote management at any moment from anywhere (e.g. your site goes down after-hours while you are vising a friend's home), you cannot necessarily restrict access to a list of known-good IP addresses. Therefore you are left with port 3389 fully allowed through your external firewall and it becomes a potential attack vector. Products such as RdpGuard serve an important roll in this type of scenario as they monitor connection attempts and block suspicious and known-malicious connections.

This is not intended to be an endorsement of RdpGuard or any other specific product. I want to make sure everyone understands that robust computer security is far from simple and "I have a firewall" in and of itself should not lead you to believe you have all you need.

A better option to opening multiple ports like 3389 to the outside world is to implement a SSL VPN solution. Cisco, Juniper, F5 Networks (and others I'm sure) all provide secure SSL VPN solutions. All you have to do then is to expose only one single HTTPS port such as 443 and then tunnel through any protocol you want (RDP, SSH, etc.).

This is in line with my last statement. I am not advocating a specific solution and would never attempt to without an in-depth analysis of the specific environment and needs in question. VPNs most definitely have their place. They can be overkill for some needs, and not enough for others.

                Hi Steve,

I am also using RdpGuard version 2-6-3 and it works for now as advertised. When I open the FTP server I am amazed how many hackers try to get into my server. In some case 70 of them and all were blocked by RdpGuard.

                Regards,
