Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Push Notification fed by Database Query

    Hey folks,

I am trying to setup a system that checks a users zip code (stored in a user table) and sends a push notification out to all other users in the same or surrounding zip codes (I have a function for that already). I know how to query the database and get the users, what I'm having an issue with is finding a push notification example that actually takes a result set of users, and then sends notification out to those users. I have looked at the pushwoosh example but don't see how to make it work in this case. I can't use the pushwoosh filters because I don't know ahead of time what zone someone will be in as it's calculated on the fly. I saw there is a action javascript function (PhoneGap SMS) to send an sms to specific phones and I'm wondering if I can somehow use that on the server side. I really would prefer to use push notification if possible rather than sms, but will take SMS for time being if necessary.

I really need something I can work with in the next few days. Anyway, anyone have ideas?

if you can send with twilio you can send anything from database. it is not that difficult. push notification is little hard, sms is easy.
alpha has twilio integration or you can easily write your own as i did.
      thanks for reading

To the "zip code area" that a user is currently in? Are the users moving in and out of these "zip code areas".

And... the "zip code areas" or "zones" are created at any time?

Is it that you want to send notifications to users who are currently in a "zone" which has just been assigned?

The users are moving... and the zones are moving... so you want to push to the intersection of the two?

If so, it's possible that setTags (PGB PushWoosh plugin) and createMessage conditions (API) may work nicely.

Hi folks, I appreciate the replies.

David, are you talking about PushWoosh and using their API? I'm not familiar with PGB. Is there an example anyone (maybe you) has done showing the use of what you are talking about with Alpha?

Yes, PushWoosh Plugin, PhoneGap Build, and the PushWoosh Server-side API.

Is your app Alpha / PhoneGap Build? Is what I described what you want to do?

if you are NOT familiar with PGB does that mean this is a web application running on a mobile device? I think it would matter immensely if it were a phonegap application vs a web application.

I think you should clarify that first.

Re: Push Notification fed by Database Query

                Hey guys,

Charles, I actually need the app to run on mobile and web....but the send notification feature is primarily going to be a mobile based function. I am familiar with PhoneGap as I've done several PhoneGap apps, just hadn't seen the abbreviation PGB for it before. So, let's assume that what David mentioned would be a possible solution. I am still unsure about how to get it to work with what I'm seeing in PushWoosh. I did send a note to PushWoosh and they seemed to suggest it's certainly possible.

The person sending the notification will choose to send out to all other users in their own zip code (which is already stored in a user table), or an enhanced area (surrounding zips, or city/county). The database is queried to find all users in the area requested and a msg is sent to each. It does not need to find a user as they come into the area (such as traveling on vacation or something - but that would be great actually), it just needs to reference the zip in the users account.

I had the system working with sms (send as email using carrier and cell number), prior to making the mobile app, but would prefer to use push notification.

Ok, no offense as I am sure you understand the implications of not knowing the difference. Like I said, wish I could help - sounds interesting.

Then it's a much simpler process.

As each user fires up the app, you have access to their data... their zip. Using the PushWoosh plugin, you use .setTags to add their zip to a PushWoosh TagName. PushWoosh now knows the zip for that user's phone.

Then, on the server side, you use "conditions" with PushWoosh createMessage. Conditions operate on Tag Names.
