Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Performance Issue - Dirty Fields check or Save all fields. Which is better?

On a component in Detail view I have a very busy page with lots of fields. While keeping Performance and Stability in mind, is it better to have the system check for only Dirty fields or Save all fields during the update? Your opinions please!

what is "a lot" to you? also, what is a "busy page"? Other than that go with only dirty, remember ---- a calculated field value might not set the field dirty and not give you what you want...if you actually have a LOT of fields, perhaps you want to look into the newer options to optimize such as a text-box editor. That allows you to edit any of the fields you want with a single editor.
I guess this all goes back to the question - what is a lot?

My personal experience has been that text controls don't slow an application down - it's multiple calls to lists (SQL calls to populate them) based on other lists as in Parent/Child lists - especially based on arguments. SO my fix has been to embed other UX's rather than trying to load the list at the time of the initial load of the first list.

    Hope that helps!

additionally, if you update certain fields with default values and don't make the fields dirty you need to save all fields during the update.

Re: Performance Issue - Dirty Fields check or Save all fields. Which is better?

I noticed that on a page that had about 30 fields ( to me that's a lot) and save all fields active, clicking my SAVE button would sometimes not "activate", often requiring a second click to complete the cycle. I don't know what it's doing when it won't respond the first time. It just appears stuck. Wish I could place some kind of alert msg to let the user know "it's working" or to tell them to "click again". Any clues????

30 text fields? I REALLY do not think that is a lot or that it should cause your problem. Do you have any client-side code or ajax callbacks going on? is this a list with a detail view? Do you have repeating sections with calculated values?
I am asking all of these questions because there has to be more than data binding to a single table with 30 fields, and like you I beleive the submit button should work first time.
btw, you can add a wait msg when you click to let the user know something is happening by going into the UX properties and adding a wait message for ajax callbacks - OR in the click event properties of any button.
