Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    New to Alpha and confused with something simple

    Hi Guys,

    I am new to Alpha but been in php/javascript/css/html/sql and all the good stuff for 20 years.

    I am just playing with doing an intranet within alpha to turn the basics.

    I have found the a5w include function for useing header/footer pages.

    I must be missing something though as i setup the header page with the usual html,head,body tags etc and the relevant ones in the footer, and the main middle page as separate pages too.

    when i save/close and come back alpha is putting all the main html,head,body tags in all my files - which obviously i don't want and that is the header of a header and footer page.

    What am I doing wrong please ?

    Thanks

    Lee

    I am not sure I understand you, could you draw it.

    I think you are trying too hard.

    Unless you are doing something complex you will not drop into xBasic.

    As I said I may have missed your point.

    As you are new it should take you a while to outgrow the basic Alpha RAD paradigm.

      you are not doing anything wrong, that is the way alpha five a5w page editor does. in trying to help you it is in your way.
      once you design any page in alphafive a5w editor do not open again via the editor.
      i do not know another simple way of doing a5w half pages as you do in php.
      thanks for reading

          Lee... I'm not sure why it would be suggested that you not use the Alpha Editor again after saving an A5W Page. There are caveats but, of course, you can use the editor. Once you open the A5W page in the editor, use the tabs at the bottom of the page and switch to source.

          There's a lot of stuff in Alpha... so could you describe what you mean by...

          I have found the a5w include function for useing header/footer pages.
          Where did you find it? Knowing this will give context to your question.

            Web and mobile is UTF-8 format today. If you retrieve data from database it is in UTF-8 format in Alpha also. But Alphas Editor saves page in ANSI format. Therefore you should not use Alphas Editor at all. Same is with some functions for example if you use Alphas String functions. Upper()-function is a good example. It does not work at all with UTF-8. Use some external editor instead and be aware of problems with UTF-8 when using Alphas built in functions.

              Lee,

              What you are doing is very common. Here is what I have in my app

              in somepage.a5w

              <!DOCTYPE html>
              <html>
              <head>

              <link href="css/GrBlue/style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
              <title>Contact Us</title>
              </head>
              <body class="GrBluePage">
              <table id="twrap">
              <tr><td class="tleft">&nbsp;</td><td class="ttc"><%a5 a5w_include("page_header.a5w") %></td><td class="tright">&nbsp;</td></tr>

              where page_header.a5w is

              <div id="header">
              <table><tr><td style="width:600px; height: 130px; text-align:center;">

              <p style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;font-size:10pt;font-weight:normal;color:#000000;">
              <%a5
              if variable_exists("Session.FULLNAME")
              ?"Welcome " + Session.FULLNAME
              end if
              %>&nbsp;</p>
              </div>
              </td><td>&nbsp;</td></tr></table>
              </div><!-- end header -->

              and at the bottom of the page is

              <tr><td class="tleft">&nbsp;</td><td class="tbc"><%a5 a5w_include("page_footer.a5w") %></td><td class="tright">&nbsp;</td></tr>
              </table>
              </body></html>

              where page_footer.a5w is

              <div id="clearone">&nbsp;</div>
              <div id="footer">
              <p><a href="copyrightnotice.htm" target="_blank">Copyright&copy; 2011-2017 My company name - All Rights Reserved</a>
              <br>
              <%a5
              if variable_exists("SESSION.FOOTCODE")
              ?SESSION.FOOTCODE
              end if
              %>
              <br>&nbsp;</p>
              </div>

              Also, gandhi is right. Do not open the header or footer page to the WYSIWYG tab. There is an option in settings to open pages in the Source tab. Always select that option and never use WYSIWYG.

                  But if you need type words any words with extended characters then the Alphas editor is useless because it saves the page in ANSI format and breaks these words.

                  In html -page line <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" /> does not solve this coding problem because the initial format of saved *.a5w page is ANSI format.

                  I wonder why developer can not choose in Alpha ANSI or UTF-8 as the format of saved page in Alphas settings?

                  EDIT This forum also breaks these words so can not give example but Teemu Selanne(Selanne in native format) would be a good example.
