Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Application Server Freezing Up

I'm using Alpha Anywhere Web Application Server (Build 4346_4889) . The WAS has been freezing up a lot recently. While the icon on the system tray indicates that the WAS is running, I cannot open the interface nor can I exit out by right clicking. The site also goes down.

I know this may be a stab in the dark, but wondering if anyone has ideas on where I should start looking. FYI - this is a high capacity Amazon server - r3.2xlarge. (I wish I could use Zebra Host for this project, but unfortunately client requires Amazon).

Are you running Always Up? It would restart the WAS if it gets pegged from too much traffic

Thanks Greg. I'm not running Always Up on this particular server, although my understanding is that AU is only helpful if/when the server restarts.

Have you turned on logging? That would be the first thing I do in a case like this. You enable the logs in the app server settings.

As for Always up many people here use the product including myself. It wan be setup to detect when the server hangs and restart it, restart nightly, memory monitoring, email you when there is a problem, etc.

The issue is not how big your Amazon server is, the issue is how much memory is being used by the web server. If you can look at task manager look at the memory usage. If that's it, you can try going to the II$ version of Alpha in order to have IIS scale your application, or you can use AU to restart the web servers to keep them below the threshold limit (it varies, I seem to start having issues around 250K kb) so I restart on a schedule nightly, or you can use multiple instances of the WAS (I use 7).

One way to tell is, once you restart the WAS after a lock up, how long before you lock up again? If memory is the issue, the first indication of a problem will be filters failing. If the time is over 24 hours, then the AU solution is a good one. If it is less that 24 hours, then try the multiple instances (and AU). There is a lot of info here on the message board, and Alpha has help on the subject.

Have you checked the Windows event log? If you see a large number of 4625 events in the Security log that would indicate automated hacking attempts that could be draining resources.
