Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    GUID auto increment problem

Hey guys, I've been learning about ALPHA and trying new stuff for the past month, so forgive my stupid questions...

One thing I can't get right is the GUID system. I created a Customer Id field as a textbox, and set it to auto-increment in the data binding section.

In the controls section, it is "updateable". I then tried going to the field rule editor, and as seen in the pic, the Auto increment field is grayed out and can't be selected. My data submits correctly and saves as it should, but only when I manually enter a Primary Key. Is there a server side action I should be taking?

All help is greatly appreciated, as this has stopped me for a few days now!

    Thanks,
    Rich

    Re: GUID auto increment problem

I'm a bit confused by what I'm seeing here, you are using DBF yet you have a SQL insert statement (and a very strange looking one at that)?
Also why is your primary key a GUID and not a numeric data type?

I was confused about how to build the auto increment field and made a bad assumption I needed to use the GUID instead of numeric when I built my sql table. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

No, Stephen was suggesting you use a numeric field for your primary key, asking why you were using a guid.

GUIDs do not auto-increment, that would be a violation of the meaning of a GUID.

You seem to be mixing DBF and SQL concepts. Your third image indicates you are using a SQL table, but your last image is a dialog ONLY used for DBF, never for SQL.

          Re: GUID auto increment problem

Ok so it's been over a week since I've asked this question, but I'm still at a loss as how to design SQL ONLY datasets!
          My steps:
          1. I create a sql table in the Web Projects Control Panel
          2. I now go to the normal Control Panel, and have to import the tables in order to go to my third step...
          3. Create a set, np
...except when I import or active-link my tables through the Control Panel, it automatically converts them to .dbf files instead of keeping them as sql! Frustrating....

Really I just want to create some sets from tables at this point. I'm trying to figure out how to databind multiple tables to controls, to create a pretty darn simple app to enter customer info, and appt date/time.

I've ordered the Alpha basics book from Amazon, hopefully that will help me some when it arrives, although it was written for A11.

If you're using a SQL backend, please specify what you're using.

You don't create sets from SQL sources. You never use the Control Panel for data when using SQL sources. One of your original screen shots shows the error message you're getting and refers to an Access connection.

If you're using a real SQL backend (not Access) then you'd create SQL Views (which are kinda like Sets, in dbf... or Queries in Access).

If you're using Access... then stop... and starting using MySQL, SQL Server, or MariaDB... or one of the others. They'll all free... and all real SQL Databases.

Then you can work with AlphaDAO Connections to your SQL Database. You'd then create and use Views, if needed (which can be updateable, depending on how they're designed).

Thank you David! I'll get on that now. The limitless options in Alpha are kinda hurting me until I can figure out my workflow a little better.

Understood... there are so many potential directions to take. If you're working with SQL Databases, then also have a look a something like Navicat. I prefer working with SQL database with Navicat rather than the native SQL Server Management Studio or MySQL Workbench. They're still required at times, but rarely.

                  Re: GUID auto increment problem

you are in mobile / web part of the message board, the steps you are describing looks like desktop steps. however do not worry about dbf format of the linked tables ( active or passive) they work directly on the sql tables. making this easy for you if you know how to work with dbf files. if you are not and then if you are really working with web or mobile portion of development then just stick with web control panel and build ux or grid( not good for mobile use) then you will see it is easy to do with sql alone using connections strings, no need to import the tables .
