syntax for tranforming phone numbers

I'm storing the phone numbers in a character field with no separators. I simply want to display the phone number like (123) 123-1234.

I'm using: TRANSFORM(<value>,"@R (999) 999-9999")

It shows the number with the separators but then I cannot save changes to the number?

Context is really important here. Display the phone number where... in what. Transform is an XBasic function.... so how is the data getting through to a display?

If it's a UX component... and a TextBox control... then you can use the Client-side properties "On Get Value Javascript" and "On Set Value Javascript".

On Get Value Javascript - remove the formatting for saving.

return value.replace(/\D+/g, "");

On Set Value Javascript - format the number for display.

var s2 = (""+value).replace(/\D/g, '');
var m = s2.match(/^(\d{3})(\d{3})(\d{4})$/);
return (!m) ? null : "(" + m[1] + ") " + m[2] + "-" + m[3];

looks like you are doing this in an ux ( <value> is in the ux properties)
you are looking at different area to display the phone, the best place is to go down few more lines. you will see client side properties, select client side formatting, and then mask, then on the pop up select predefined and select phone. that will give you the display you want. ( not that you cannot do the way you have done, this is the best approach for me at least).
this will change the character input just as transform does. if you want to store the data without the mask characters, just plain numbers all you need to do is go the the ux afterDialogValidate function ( it may be dialogValidate in version 12) where you are saving the data and add this one line before the save data line.

e.dataSubmitted.your_phone_control = remspecial(e.dataSubmitted.your_phone_control)

no need for fancy coding.

edit: this post assumes alpha did not remove client side formatting/mask in version 12.

okay do this way.
if you do the way you have the display will be phone number format but when you enter it will be no mask just the numbers, you do not need unformat.
to save without the formatting characters
go to serverside events, canInsertRecord and add this to the code already there but above the line that says with page variables

DataSubmitted.phone_number_field = remspecial(DataSubmitted.phone_number_field)

it will save without formatting characters.
if you need this for updating do the same in the canUpdaterecord event.

Display format: TRANSFORM(<value>,"@R (999) 999-9999")
Display unformat: remspecial(convert_type(<value>,"C"))

Have a look at the Display unformat onscreen note... those are always little gems.
