Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Drop Down in Search part of List Control?

    Hi Guys,

Trying to build a List Control with a Search part.

Would like the Search fields to be with dropdown data.

Also the data is to be filtered so that, data in the search dropdown, must match the records that could be shown in the list because of list filter criteria.

eg list to show records with Invoice_Paid= True.

Please advise Documentation or even better, a Video.

    TIA
    Regards

Keith, I put search controls in the UX then use the action javascript 'Filter Records in a List Control'
    Looks something like this:

      Hi Stephen,

Many thanks for showing what can be done, is it possible to show how to do it. Is there a video you could point me to?

We had done this before using cascading dropdown search box with a grid, each dropdown was a child of the previous dropdown. We are trying to upgrade our site to SQL and use UX in place of all the grids.

Re: Drop Down in Search part of List Control?

Not sure about a video ... I'm sure there is one somewhere, suggest searching the Alpha video library.

It is simple to setup in a UX. Just add your List control (I'm assuming you know how to load this based on a SQL query).
There are basically two types of search: Quick Search for multiple field searches and Detail Search for specific single field searches.

For a Quick Search, add a textbox field to the UX and a button for Search.
        On the button onClick event, I place javascript text to call some action javascript. Something like {dialog.object}.runAction('Quick Search Repairs');
Define the runAction using 'Filter Records In A List Control'
In the properties, you can define this as a Keyword search and select all the fields in the list you wish to search. Looks like this:
        Quick Search.jpg

For a Detail Search, put whatever controls you need to search individual fields in the list (can be character, dropdowns, booleans, dates, etc.) and a button for Search.
The onClick of the button is again defined with action javascript 'Filter Records In A List Control'
This time, do not select keyword search but define the search fields individually. Looks like this:
        Detail Search.jpg

For clearing the search results, in the button to clear the filter place the following in the onclick event.
        {dialog.object}.getControl('LISTNAME').clearSearchList({searchMode : 'auto'});

Hope this gets you started ...

I should add that in the List properties, for the Quick Search, you may also have to check 'Has Search Part'.
          ListProperty.jpg

And in the SearchPart, check the fields you want to be searched.
          SearchPart.jpg

I've forgotten now why this was done in the list and on the UX.

            Hi Stephen,

These all look very interesting. Is it possible to keep the final filtered list hidden until the search criteria has been entered and the search button clicked?

Not sure if you mean hide the actual list, but the results of the filtered list won't be displayed until you click the search button.
