Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Import SVG icons

I have an SVG icon I would like to add to my app. I can't figure out how to do it. I did open the svgicons.svg used by alpha to see if I could just cut and paste the data in, but it is obviously different. The readme file with the icons didn't make sense to me.

    Re: Import SVG icons

William, I dread doing this because I struggle with it everytime. If you have already created a local SVG definition, the only way I know how to add something into the definition is to redefine it and add all the files back in plus your new ones. Perhaps somebody else knows an easier way .. I'd also love to know how to do it.

I take it you have seen Selwyn's video .. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjR6mS3F4ds

The UX has a property... Local SVG definitions... add it there. You'll find lots of good information inside the builder dialog for this property.

Post your SVG definition and I'll add it... see how it turns out.

David, the Local SVG definitions is where you indicate which .svg file you are using. This is created by Alpha when it converts your definition to a mysvg.svg
The problem becomes how do you now add new svg files to that mysvg.svg.

        Here's mine ...

          Re: Import SVG icons

Maybe... not sure... but that's not how I use this property. A standard set of SVG Icons are automatically included with Alpha. I create a new UX and can use one of the standard SVG Icons without having do to anything.

Use the Local SVG Definitions to add to that standard set.

Grab an SVG Icon from FlatIron and edit it with Notepad++, or something. Copy that SVG Definition. Open the Local SVG definitions property, Import SVG definition, paste your definition, give it a name, click ok. You'll now have 1 SVG Icon in Local SVG definitions.

When you go to use an SVG Icon, the set is now Grouped... the included set, and Local SVG Icons... which now shows that 1 just added.

            Re: Import SVG icons

Using "local svg" in the search, I did find this in the documentation:

            https://www.alphasoftware.com/docume...efinitions.xml

Didn't find that before, and I seem to have been able to import what I wanted and it looks fine, at least in the preview. But according to the documentation, it should appear in a part of the SVG icons listed as local, but it doesn't. So I was able to import the one I wanted, but still can't select it for my project.

And I have found that the icons are available, but not where I am using them.

They don't seem to be available for the properties in the Tree Data Genie for the Expanding menu Genie.

I think I will be sending a bug report about this.

Bug reported, received a response that it has been fixed, and will be in tomorrows pre-release.

I figured I should add in the steps I took to add SVG icons to a UX.

I placed the SVG icons I wanted to add into its own folder.

The I selected the properties button on the left, scrolled down to the CSS/SVG section, then selected the button for Local SVG definitions.

I selected the Import folder of SVG files link at the bottom of the window, clicked on the Select button and navigated to the folder that contained the icons, and clicked the Open button.

I selected one of the files, but it imported the two I had in the folder. Then you need to fill in the prefix for all the icons.

I then selected the Preview SVG Icons link at the bottom to make sure they were imported, selected the OK button, and saved my component.

                        Re: Import SVG icons

Those look good. Eventually, I may hire somebody to make a group of custom icons for me.

Also, while the problem I mentioned above is fixed, it is only in the pre-release, until the next update. But it really affects the wizard, and there is a workaround. The only problem is that it isn't making the icon available to be chosen, but you can paste the icon into the field, and that works fine.

To make it easy, I created a button, made it icon only, (Button layout) chose the icon I wanted, (Image name) copied it out of the properties field. Deleted the button. Then pasted it into the Icon field in the Menu data genie of the expanding Menu Genie.

                          Hello William,

What did you search for initially to try to find this information? We can fine-tune our search engine to provide better results on this topic.

Saying I didn't find it before is more about me than the documentation in that sentence. I may have been so focused on the term import that I may have glossed over the term local the first time so that one was on me.

My current search attempts involve trying to put a list count into a ControlBar, and how to update a parent ControlBar from an embedded UX.
