Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Session disappearing?

I have one user of an app (mostly desktop browser) who is having a very different experience than the other several-hundred users. In the dozen+ screenshots I've seen so far, the most consistent thing I can see looks like the session is simply gone. The errors and even random login dialogs appear to her that all point to, at least as the symptom, that the session doesn't exist. Or, maybe it does and there's some problem using the session variables - never seen anything like this.

Our session length is 15 minutes but I've confirmed she has this problem even just one minute after login. We're using Alpha's security with a lot of adjustments and, not that it matters much because she's alone in this problem, currently serving 4119-4825.

She's using Chrome, which we recommend for our app, and usually hard-wired to the network. Her (university) IT department has been through her computer and found no problems.

I still think it's a local problem and cannot get two questions answered:
    - Does anyone else at the university have this trouble? and
    - What happens if she uses another computer?

But getting these answers (believe it or not) is about impossible. So I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this kind of behavior or has any suggestions.

    Thanks.

Just a stab in the dark...if it is unique to her machine, then maybe it is an anti-virus/malware issue. What happens if she turns that off?

Thanks Pat. Finally got an answer that this does not happen when she uses another computer - so confirmed it's local to her computer.

We've suggested the antivirus problem to IT (this user has no clue) but I presume IT has the same antivirus on all university computers. We'll see.

        Re: Session disappearing?

Are you using a loadbalancer? Than depending on method for tracking sessions on the loadbalancer:
Maybe this specific computor has not a stable ip adres or has the user turned on private navigation at that computors browser

I had some complaints of users who were connecting to the internet application from within a terminal server session.

Yes Ger. Their IT department today wondered if her constant movement between wireless access points was part of the problem, and it may be, but I'm still not sure why the troubles with a non-moving desktop computer. But I'll pass along your comments.

            Re: Session disappearing?

A user reported a similar sounding problem Monday morning with our hosted application. I will try to gather more information from them. I have not been able to duplicate the problem and I have not received any other reports from other sites about losing sessions.

              Re: Session disappearing?

So, my customer says that losing sessions has been an ongoing problem for them. I am not sure they are really losing the sessions, though, as they have not given me any screen dumps. The issue happens (frequently) for them when they try to save their changes from an updateable Grid. What might be happening is that the client workstation is just never receiving a response from the server. Without a server response, my production code leaves a "Please wait...." message open and prevents user from clicking anywhere else. My dev code works properly to clear the "Please wait..." after 30 seconds, if no response from server. Which should allow them to just click the "Save" button again. Soon I will update production server with new code and hopefully user won't get locked out by the "Please wait..." message for an infinite amount of time.
