Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Basic grid insert error

    Hi
I have a grid setup as readonly with detail view. DB is mariadb. Based on a customers table where customerID is integer and auto-increment
When i add a new record in the detail view, customerID shows "Auto" ( as always with primary autoincrement keys )
When i enter some data and click save, i get the error "Record not inserted" "column count doesn't match value count at row 1 "
So i analyze the sql sent to the DB, and i see its
insert into customers (CustomerID, Name, Address......) values ( :New_NAME, :New_ADDRESS....) .
The statement shouldn't include CustomerID in there that's what's causing the count mismatch...

In the detail view make sure the auto inc primary key field has its "Update Settings / Updateable" unchecked. If the field is not in the detail view, I'd add it, set its label to none, then set the field type to hidden.

      Re: Basic grid insert error

I tried all that before even posting, but i think the grid is broken. I even tried to tick it as Updateable and select *unbound in the table name, Alpha Anywhere still insists in trying to update it...
Luckily it's not an histerically big grid...

Thank you for your help nevertheless

        Re: Basic grid insert error

        you can try one thing.
go to component definition and after the connection string there is the table or sql statement selection box right next to it refresh button. click that and refresh the properties associated with the fields and number of fields.
then go to grid definition and see if there are any errors, same for search and detail section if you have them. if none or you have corrected all of the errors rerun the grid and see if it behaves properly.

          Re: Basic grid insert error

What I do not understand is why you do not make it a updateable grid in the first place if you're going to do an insert anyway. Then go to the properties of the detail view and untick "allow updates".

            Re: Basic grid insert error

Also, did you check the "Grid / Query" property window how the "Select Primary Key(s)" properties are set, to ensure the "Primary Key is Auto-Increment?" is checked and that there is still a checkmark on the actual key field?
