Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Sort Order of Named Browse not Kept when Embedded

    I have a number of tabbed forms in my application which each have an embedded browse using a named browse definition. I have managed to get all the information I needed on each of the embedded browses, but when they open in the form, the sort order that is defined in the browse does not seem to function. I can click on the title of any column and it will sort as expected. I want the initial window on the tab to open in a defined sort order, not in record number order which is what seems to happen.

    I have tried everything I can think of. If I right-click on the embedded browse window, there is not an option to set the order available.

    Is there something I am missing here?

    Just tried this in AlphaSports on a form based on the invoice set. Named browse "aa". Code for ontabchange event of object tabbed1. Browse (tool_select1) on tab 3, left to right, of invoice_items table.

    Code:
    if parentform:tabbed1.tab_get() = 3
    parentform:tool_select1.Activate()
    parentform:Tables:invoice_items.order("quantity")
    parentform.Resynch()
    end if
    There can be only one.

      Did you try setting the sort order for the table in the form properties?

        "an embedded browse using a named browse definition", those are named browses of child tables with their own sort order? When viewing a form based on a set, even with named browses, I think you will only be able to have one sort order controlling the set. My suggested code, with modification and extension, should set that sort order based on which tab is selected.
        There can be only one.

          Thanks for the help! All the comments led me to going back over the set structure that the form is built on. It turns out that the sort order of the child table in the set is what controls the initial sort of records in the embedded browse, regardless of how the browse definition sets the sort. Interestingly, once the sort is changed, by clicking the header on a column, that sort order is maintained when stepping through the records of the main form. Leaving the form and then coming back returns the sort to the original designated order in the child table of the set definition.

          I guess that's pretty obvious once I went back and looked at the organization of the set. Still, it seemed to me that the named browse should supersede the sort or query in the table that it is based on; at least that is how I think it works on a regular browse based on a table.

          I really appreciate the assistance of the members of this group, you have all saved me a lot of time and frustration!
