Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Runtime Patches on Shadowed Machines

Which MS C Compiler version is in the newer release? I have 4.3.2 Build 4119 Addins 4825 and it is using the C compiler version 1800.

I haven't noticed any changes to the desktop since that version was released.

      FYI

I rolled back my build from: v4.5.2, Build 4770 to v4.5.0, Build 4584. I tested on my local machine and the automatic update of the shadow worked.

Well, I thought v4.5.2, Build 4770 to v4.5.0, Build 4584 was the answer, but it didn't work. The interesting thing is that the re-optimize worked on one computer but would not work on the second computer. This leads me to believe that there is something missing in the operating system that Alpha needs to complete the re-optimization process. Unfortunately, I have very limited access to these computer. I think they are both running Win 7.

Has anyone tried a newer build which has resolved this issue?

The most recent Build 5159-5132 has resolved this issue for me.

I tried that patch and I ended up with many other problems.

Re: Runtime Patches on Shadowed Machines

We have been using A5 version 4770 for most of our users to run a desktop application using Windows 10. When we updated our shadowed users to A5 v4770, we were unable to automatically update the shadows with new releases of our application. The auto update process would crash, and the shadowed application was corrupted. We tried moving forward to more current versions of Alpha, but this caused numerous other problems with our application. I installed A5 v4584 mentioned above, but found that it too would not auto update without corrupting the shadow. So then I installed A5 v4119 on the shadow, and it worked properly. Interestingly, after the shadow is updated using A5 v4119, A5 v4770 appears to run fine on the shadow, but it won't auto update to a new version of the application without crashing.

I am concerned that recent releases from Alpha this past year have made the desktop version much less stable. When I have time, I plan to prepare a list of problems to submit to Alpha that are keeping us from moving to later versions.

                  Hi Dick,

I too experienced many problems in going to the most recent builds. I share your concern about the desktop becoming less stable and since it appears almost all of Alpha's energy is focused on the web side....I am not sure we will see fixes for the desktop side. If you have not seen it, the link below is to another post that is related. At Ronald Anusiewicz's suggestion I tried build 4269_4867. It has been working well for me and alleviated all of the issues that I had in the thread below (including shadows not updating properly):

                  https://forum.alphasoftware.com/show...top-Build-5521

I thought I would mention the thread above in case it might help you.

                  Regards,

                  Jeff

                    Jeff --

Thanks for your note. I wish I had checked this message forum sooner before I spent so many hours chasing issues with 5221 and some of the other newer versions. I'm not sure what is the best approach here, but there are a few features in the newest versions (particularly the built-in ability to send a file by SFTP) that we would like to be able to use. I have just downloaded A5v4269, and I'll give it a try. However, at some point, I am going to try to document the various issues we are having with the most recent version and send the list to Alpha along with a copy of our application in the hope they will fix some of the problems.
