Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Page Size Mismatch

I have a recurring problem with my small amateurish applications that I find quite frustrating.

Based in the UK, the standard paper used is A4 (211mm wide by 297mm long). Reports and letters often give me trouble, as although I keep to within margins, I get an error message saying that the report is 18.6 cm wide, yet won't fit on the standard page size. I attach a screen shot.

Any ideas, as printer properties and such appear okay?

    David.

Thanks, Cornelius, I think you have touched on the problem.

For some reason that I cannot fathom, I can only bring up Region Properties, not Report Properties. Here is what I get, and you can see the image has identical fields, but the header is different. It looks as if I've set up something wrong, but again I am at a loss on how to rectify it.

          Thanks for chipping in, Stan.

I can see this under the Reports section. However, I am using the letters section. These are fairly standard letters to send to clients who are the UK equivalent of owners of condominiums. Besides fields being populated with the normal name, address, it also has reference to the property. As well as this it has personalised information about their arrangements to pay and balance owed. As I say, Pretty standard stuff.

For this and other letters, I can only ever see under properties the 'Region' header. Have I totally missed something?

            Re: Page Size Mismatch

For letters, since you know that the margins are set correctly and all objects are within the margins, what happens if you set the Overflow data to Trim or Shrink instead of allowing the Prompt at Print Time? You are correct that the only option for letters seems to be Region properties.

I've been told that letters are specialized reports.

If an option is missing in a letter convert to a report and carry on.

If not familiar with the automatic conversion process. Start a new report based on the same table or set as the letter, use the Report menu, Import option.

Thank you Stan. I've tried the import, and it works.

David, this was driving me nuts too when working on a USA job I inherited.
I supect you will find that one or more objects ( see Stan post #6 ) are out of bounds.
If you choose to keep the selected page size, you will see what drops off. Usually it is something like a line which you cannot see that easily.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.
