Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Performance of duplicate text boxes

    Hey everyone,

Has anyone created a form that reuses the same field 3 or more times?

I have an entry form I'm working on and I'm toying with the idea of making a specialized workflow for each of our departments to maximize data entry efficiency but I'm concerned about performance. I'm using DBFs over a network.

anyone try something like this before? How was speed performance?

    Hi Marco,
Have you looked at creating a conditional object? If you want to use the same field to hold different types of data, you could place the field LABEL into a conditional object to point the user to the data he is to enter. If for example you have another field where the department is entered, your condition could change based on that field to display a different field label.

A bit more info on what you are trying to do would be helpful.

Re: Performance of duplicate text boxes

      Hi Robin,

That's actually a pretty good suggestion that I'm definitely going to file away for use on other forms. What I was thinking about doing was a little different. I'll try and clarify.

Each department would have a slightly different ideal work flow for this form.
(this will be an extremely simplified example)

After they all enter in data in common fields:
      ----- FieldA, FieldB, FieldC

then each department would like to only enter/see in the following fields

      Dept Alpha
      ----- Field1, Field2, Field3, Field4

      Dept. Beta
      ----- Field2, Field5

      Dept. Delta
      ----- Field5, Field3, Field1, Field2, Field4

So as you can see each department would want to enter on different fields in different a order.

I can't simply hide or inactivate the fields since they also need a different tab order.

So my thought was to place each specialized worked flow on a tab control (a tab for each department) and an onDepart code on fieldC would jump to the correct tab dependent on which department the users was from. But if i do that then field5 and field2 would be on form 3 times and field 5 twice.

on a larger scale would duplicating fields on a form directly impair the speed of the form saving or navigating?

Re: Performance of duplicate text boxes

You can repeat the fields, just give them different object names on the form. Just so you are aware that on the same record, whatever was entered last by whichever department will become the one field's value on each tab.

          Hey Robin,

Thanks! That shouldn't be a issue but I will definitely keep that caveat in mind.

Why don't you just make different forms for different departments to use? Am I missing something?
You can start with one form, and duplicate and change it as necessary for each department.

Re: Performance of duplicate text boxes

...or possibly a dialog box for entry. each department would get a slightly different dialog to enter their information. Since you're creating the dialog, YOU control what gets entered and you can field-check the data as it is entered. You could possibly use One Dialog displaying the needed fields using the {startpos} command and conditional fields to display what you want entered by whom.
