Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

script to popup about to save ?

    Hello,
Curious to what the script/code text would be where I have a modal form. The user clicks edit goes into a field and types changes, but then changes their mind. I have a cancel changes button, but they forget they were abandoning changes and need to click this button and click next record. Those unwanted changes they just entered just got saved and they don't realize it. I wish to avoid this possible mistake.

I would like to know what code text to attach to the next record button that pops up a message box saying "you are about to save the changes you made to the record to continue click OK otherwise click cancel to lose changes". Clicking OK just continues and saves the changes moving to the next record and clicking Cancel gives another final pop up message "Are you sure you wish to lose your changes?" with a yes and no selection.

    Any help is appreciated!!!!!!

    Field level "OnChange"
Set a variable. Can apply to multiple fields.
Disable AS top menu, build your own. It's easy.
Then, OnFetch next record, make it conditional in the script that the process won't run if the flag is set.

Or, add a Conditional Object which displays the warnings.
As in check the status. If in Entry Mode, display "Check changes and Save or Cancel"

I am working my way through a process with up to 100 records being submitted to an unforgiving recipient, so I feel your pain.

      Cansave event

If fired, display the message and either continue or cancel()

Is the form based on a set? Would be more complicated then.

I used the Cansave event on the form as it seemed simple from your description. It is a form based upon a set, but I was able to get it to cancel changes made with "NO" or save the record entry or changes with "Yes" and cancel to continue with work with Cancel.

I used a Cando to stop save on a no button click and then used cancel()

I thought everything was perfect until I clicked save straight away and the CanSave event fired off which is not too good. Not sure how to work around that as it is a save event. I guess I can change the text of my message, but would prefer a save as to messages.

Thank you for the suggestions and any additional thoughts are appreciated!!!!!!!!

alltext() <> alltext_initial() -> .T. if the user made any changes to the record.

I think that's what you're wanting to check. No changes, don't display message?

            Is the syntax correct Stan?
I am, as you know, no coder, but would
            (alltext() <> alltext_initial() ) .T.
Work? I am flying a kite here!

The example is from the documentation and is meant to read

alltext() <> alltext_initial() yields .T. if the user made any changes to the record.

              or

alltext() <> alltext_initial() evaluates to .T. if the user made any changes to the record.

Re: script to popup about to save ?

I actually got the CanSave event to work perfect. Added a global variable set for .T. condition and set it to .f. in record save. If I navigate the popup appears with choices of save current record, lose changes or record entry, and continue editing record. If I click save record, the record just saves. Success! Thanks Al!

Stan thanks again as I was able to use your line to use for developing close form button and have a message saying the record has not been saved and a yes, no, cancel (A save, abandon, or return to record) box. It helps if someone walks away and forgets and clicks close window, it wakes them up with both functions!

                  Too much fun and learning!
Thank you for all the suggestions!
