Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Display static text plus calculated field text using xbasic?

    Hello,
I have a banner that displays a calculated field text from a table and the calculated field name is "st_name" and I would like to add some static text in front of its text output. Right now I am using a text field label on the left (Site Name:) and a calculated field on the right (st_name) which is placed in the banner using the banners appearance to blend it all together. I am guessing there is a better way while this works I am curious how to get the two together in a statement.

    Thanks again for any help!
    Paul

Did you try making the calculated field expression

cfield = "Site Name "+expression that derives st_name
    There can be only one.

      Hi Stan,
I had tried something like that I thought and gave up and of course I just tried what you said and that is the solution!
I think I probably tried it outside the expression.

      Thank you again!

Hello Stan or anyone else that can help here,

Can static text be added to the end of the calculated field?
Doing in the beginning works fine, but I don't see how on the end as I have a situation that needs the end to have static text.
        My expression is sitename = lookup("sites","site_id = "+s_quote(Site_ID),"site_name")

Thank you for all your assistance!

I works just like the other example. lookup() + "your text". Although it doesn't make sense to me that you want STATIC text to appear at the end. What is the text that goes after the site_id?

            Hello MoGrace,
Like I said, I used the word "site:", so after doing so, it seemed possibly strange.
So it could be "Site: + (Newark)" = "Site: Newark"
            or
"(Newark) + Site" = "Newark Site" where this sounds and looks better.

I had tried what you said, but that didn't seem to work and why I ask now as I am missing some key way of doing it at the end.
When doing like you say I just get the site name on the banner and no static text afterwards.

            Thanks you,
            Paul

Re: Display static text plus calculated field text using xbasic?

There should be no processing difference between

              "Site:"+ lookup("sites","site_id = "+s_quote(Site_ID),"site_name")
              and
              lookup("sites","site_id = "+s_quote(Site_ID),"site_name")+" site"

other than the positioning of the word site in the result.

As Alpha returns the full field contents including trailing spaces I would think you want

              lookup("sites","site_id = "+s_quote(Site_ID),"alltrim(site_name)")+" site"

so that the site name and the word site aren't separated by extra spaces.

There is a little more "elbow room" in the interactive window and sometimes it helps when trying out various expressions. Access the interactive window and paste in (using a known site_id .....

              testexp = "Site:"+ lookup("sites","site_id = "+s_quote("123456"),"site_name")

With the cursor somewhere in this line use the Enter key and then on the next line
              ? testexp
              you should see something like
              Code:
              ="Site: Newark "
              Then try the other variation

              lookup("sites","site_id = "+s_quote(123456),"site_name")+" site"

              and you should see

              Code:
              ="Newark site"
It may be that your current calculated field object display width is not allowing the word site to be shown.

                Hi Stan and all,
I just noticed that for the calculated fields that if you have a table that is empty, the field name shows as to zero as there is no id number available. How can you get it to display 0 when there are no table records like when you first start the program and have not entered any data?

I am using variations of this to show record counts of certain items
                tenants = count(tenants->tenant_id,GRP->sites)

                Thanks for any help here!

                  Try

                  tenants = *if_error(count(tenants->tenant_id,GRP->sites),0)

Of course as usual you are right on for the solution!

                    Thank you for your wisdom!
