Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Losing Indexes

I found lots of old threads on this issue and in one of them Tom C asked if there were records being added to the table via xbasic. There are - which in itself has been a bit of a problem in getting the index to update so the set based form displays the new record. But why would this cause an index to disappear? The main index on the ID field remains, but the other indexes on single fields, no filters, index names under 10 chars (LQ), are disappearing. I am not sure exactly when this happens, I only noticed it after doing a database compact then closing and reopening the app. Sometimes a compact will report an open table during development and prompt to skip that table, but I have not seen that error for this table.

In the set where this table is the primary, I am using the apptdate field to filter the records on the form. This is one of the indexes that disappears.

    Re: Losing Indexes

Alpha drops an index when it cannot evaluate the order expression specified.

You might try using GET_INDEX_DEFINITIONS() before the xbasic records add section and CREATE_INDEXES() after.

You mean in the script where I am adding the new record? That might resolve the refresh problem too - do you think?

I saved some table definitions back in May after a version change and found there were 9 indices for this table originally.

If that's where you think the dropping might be triggered, yes. I just tested and while it is not spelled out in the documentation you can

        tmp = GET_INDEX_DEFINITIONS("tablename")
        'do stuff
        CREATE_INDEXES("tablename",tmp)

In my test Alpha did not complain if the indexes were already there and did not create any duplicates.

          Re: Losing Indexes

My thought is that I should do this when opening the database and intialize a global var like 'appt_inxdef' with a saved text file. Then I can use indexes_match_defstring() to test if any are missing and use the create_indexes() in my script... So far it seems to be the only table affected and probably because there are lots of searching, queries and adding of records on this form.

Now if I can just narrow down WHEN this is happening...off to do some more testing - Thanks!

Maybe create a dummy form and set and code the ontimer event of that form to indexes_match_defstring() and write to a text file if they don't match. That should give you the when if not the what was going on.
