Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Win 10 overwriting fields with fieldname

We have moved all our users to win10, but increasingly existing data is being overwritten randomly with the actual field name. This can happen at any time with any record / table.
User complain of forms going into a permanent change mode.

All users are on v12.4.4.1 build 4246 addins build 4859

    Any advice?

    Thanks
    Terry

Form locking. I have (had) a situation where Always Required conflicts with Double Entry. (Not my design I hasten to add!)
In this case the form went into permanent edit mode and could not be closed.
The answer was to remove the Always Required option.

As regards the fields being overwritten with the actual field name, as you will know, RT and Dev versions need to be the same, so any shadowed versions should be recompiled in my opinion using the most recent version you have chosen to install.

If the Alpha RT or App is loaded into the Program Files folder, this may also cause issues. Best located in a separate folder entirely.

Then there is always the Compact Workspace after an upgrade to Win10.

If you have tried all of these, then I am stumped.

Re: Win 10 overwriting fields with fieldname

I do not have any Double Entry Rules.
It is possible to cancel the edit mode but navigating to the next or another record in the same form will put it back into data entry mode.

RT & Dev are the same and were the working versions in Win 7

App in a separate folder & is shadowed

          Compact has been done

Thanks for the suggestions - anyone else can help?

Having rerun what we discussed, you commented on the installation process which was carried out by another company.
I suggest revisiting that process for the Win10 rollout.
Win10 caused me grief with all the updates going on in the background.
              The updates interfered with processing.

Re: Win 10 overwriting fields with fieldname

Assuming Field names and dbf names are following safe naming rules? Specifically length? Long names in either can become truncated causing all kinds of issues. I prefer 8.3 for file naming and up to 10 on field names. Anything more can have issues if certain systems(windows) happen to burp the wrong way.

Ted helped me with a large lag because I had inherited 3 tables with same names over the limit named inspections1, inspections2 and inspections3 which caused alpha to hang until it was able to figure it out. After shortening the tables to Insp1/2/3, it was lightning quick.
