Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    File Exists in and If Statement

    Below is what I have tried to get to work.
    It compiles and runs, but the result is always the same and the last statement in the process.

    if(file.exists("c:\My folder\my document 1.pdf"),my document = "c:\myfolder\my document 1.pdf",my document = "c:\My folder\my document 2.pdf")

    if(file.exists("c:\My folder\my document 1.pdf"), ------------------ it is present. Running file.exists() shows a result of .t.
    my document = "c:\myfolder\my document 1.pdf", ----------------- "the my document variable" should have "my document 1.pdf" as the content
    my document = "c:\My folder\my document 2.pdf")----------------- "the my document variable" ends up with "my document 2.pdf" as the content

    So how can I get the If statement (If this, then this, else that) to work with a file.exist statement?

    I have tried to get the correct value if the file exists using If, then, else but that gives the same result.

    All help appreciated.

    Re: File Exists in and If Statement

    Ted shouldn't it be

    Code:
    my document = if(file.exists("c:\My folder\my document 1.pdf"),"c:\myfolder\my document 1.pdf","c:\My folder\my document 2.pdf")

      Re: File Exists in and If Statement

      Logically that makes sense, however when I run the file.exists interactively (?file.exists(" filename ") the result is correct.
      Running the same as a script does not.
      I will try what you suggest, and thanks for the quick reply Jon.
      What little hair I still have.........

        Re: File Exists in and If Statement

        Try:

        vlFileExists = file.exists("c:\Myfolder\my_document_1.pdf")
        myDocument = if(vlFileExists,"c:\myfolder\my_document_1.pdf","c:\Myfolder\my_document_2.pdf")
        I think that the "." in the function is confusing the if statement.

          permissions? its always permissions, well check them anyway.

          When it you run it interactively its probably running as you.
          When you run it on the server its running under another identity and that needs access to "my folder"

            Allen, that was the solution.
            Setting the value first outside of the IF statement to establish whether or not the record was there and using the .T. or .F. returned in the script was the answer. That avoided the [.] contention.
            The value can then be used as the first IF condition to enable the rest.

            Jon, the construction I had originally was a mistake, which you kindly didn't throw custard pies at. My excuse is that I have been working on SQL and Mobile Android native shell stuff so my head was in the clouds (get it?)

            Jonathan, thanks for the suggestion and we will check the permissions if it won't run, but the syntax was the immediate problem.

              Ted, it's always a pleaseure to help out on here if I can. I have saved many hours of effort either by asking for, or finding, a solution to my Alpha problems here.

              In this instance I'm very grateful to Allen for pointing me in the right direction if I ever need to do something similar.
