Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I am testing a large app written with 10.5 in V12 (desktop)

The app has about 770 tables, and a lot of other stuff like screens, reports, etc.
I created a shadow, and so far it runs with no issues, with a very cursory test.
Will keep you posted as I go

A few years ago, an other app also in 10.5 ran in V11 with no changes or issues - so I am betting on the come that it will work with V12 - since very little has been changed on the desktop since 10.5

If anyone else has any issues with running a 10.5 app on V12, please let me know.

We (my client) are going to get a new server 2012 and are looking at using T/S instead of shadow. I feel certain 10.5 would not run on 2012, with T/S, since it is a "windows 8 base" product.

The only way to tell is to download a trial of 2012 and test that scenario.
With that large of an app, I would move it to v11 or v12 for sure, but I am sure there are reasons why you don't want to.
Also would keep the shadowed system instead unless there are defining reasons for not doing so.
I think I read somewhere here the rough pricing for desktop only with runtime is about 600.00-700.00 for v12/AA (Remember some stuff does not work with desktop only like wdt).

I already have V12 - and am testing
The reason for going to T/S is speed - it is much much faster then shadow, and no data travels back and forth - keystokes sent, and screen refreshes back.

Re: I am testing a large app written with 10.5 in V12 (desktop)

        One minor issue:
at the oninit event of the main form, where they enter a password, if they don't enter a password it does an a5.close()
It would not work in V12, so moved it to the autoexec where it does work. One disturbing thing, though, is that even though the controlpanel is hidden, instead of closing it just closed the form and took them to the control panel, and it IS NOT hidden.

I will send a bug report on that one - as it is a major security risk.

Martin, I have used a5.close() in the autoexec several times without any issue so I'm not sure why it's giving you trouble. Speculating, are you hiding the control panel through the autoexec or workspace properties? If it is one of those 2 but not both, try setting in both locations. Also, make sure you have selected the "control panel to show when the workspace is opened" which is under the workspace properties. Coming from v10, it may be blank and that may be part of the problem.
          Thanks,
          James

You misread my post - I moved it to the autoexec to fix the issue.
Alpha has since responded that they will look into it, but that it only occurs if it occurs on the startup form if it is not set in database properties.

I can report that so far, with that one minor exception, everything works without need for modification. But by maybe this coming Wednesday, I am going to have two users start using it. They will be running the most complicated part of the app, and both running it at the same time. That will be a great test.

Will post results of same be the end of the week.

I ran into a hitch, today. The module I am tsting has to do a printer override and redirect to a label printer. As nearly as I can tell, V12 uses a different amiuni driver that V10. V10 redirects perfectly but V12 gave me an error message "error communicating with printer." I will do a debug this weekend, and confirm that it is redirecting to the correct device. And if it still errors out will send in a bug report.

most excellent news - it was picking the wrong printer on one workstation
so - no problems so far

                        So far, so good
I added accounting today, so now orders and invoices/statements will be run with V12
After another week, if all goes well, I will move everyone to V12, retaining their ability to use either V10 or V12 shadow, for at least one more week after that

Orders reported Friday that it was running slow, but they got no errors, and again today all is well, so I told them it was most likely the network was slow. One day out of 2 weeks was slow, all other days same as 10.

I'm also having a friend test V10.5 on terminal services on a Server 2012. If V10.5 will run there, then V12 would not be required - although so long as it works, I will use it.

with about 11 concurrent users, and all but 3 accessing via 10.5 shadow, and 3 accessing via 12 shadow - no issues

12 does seem to load a little slower than 10, but once open seems to run about the same speed

so ...... so far so good

I switched over a fairly complex app from 10.5 to v12 (dev side only) last weekend and it was a simultaneous W7 to W8 so some cosmetic differences may be W8, like A5 titles centered with a different font. v10 has been in beta test with a user for three weeks only single user for this stage.
I am away for a bit of a holiday in Turkey for 10 days but moving on with development in between shishkebabs & touring.

I haven't test on the client side yet but I'm watching your progress and will report anything here - this is a useful share for me and the tech engineer is setting up TS not sure which vers.

The only difference I can report with Alpha so far is that wrap text in a browse no longer loses a character.

Well, at this point, since I have had no new issues I am going to move the remaining users to V12 Runtime for running the app, shadowed.
And then when we go to T/S I will know that there are no issues moving from V10.5 to V12.

Plus, in the event that anything new is added for the desktop, we will be in position to use it.
And if I do run into any bugs, V12 is where they would be fixed.
