Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Active Link table Drops

I have a simple Active Link table connected to a SQL 2012 table with 5 fields. I can read, write, run reports, etc but then out of the blue I cant access the table from the control panel. It has a question mark on it. if I run a sql query from alphas query genie it works fine but the table is useless untill i rebuild it and give it the same name.

Alpha replaces the normal table icon with one including the question mark when it can't find the physical disk file, whether it be native dbf, passive, or active link. It would seem some process is deleting your active link definition.

Understood. Whats really odd though is if I go to Alphas built in SQl query genie it will connect to the sql table and show records that I search for. So I know Alpha can see the sql table and access it but for whatever reason it cant be accessed anywhere else within alpha~

        Two different things entirely.

The sql query genie uses the connection string you have defined to retrieve data from the sql table according to whatever parameters you supply. The active link table is a disk file containing infomation about how Alpha should communicate with (using that same connection string) and display data from that same table, more or less a static definiton of fields to retrieve.

Let me add to the mystery...This is in a controlled environment for testing purposes. All on my laptop. Not connected to any network. I added a passive link table with the same criteria and when the Active Link table is broken (for lack of better words), the passive link table can be refreshed and reports can be ran, data viewede, etc. with no troubles. Any ideas?

            What anti-virus are you using?

It may not like something and moves the table to it's anti-virus chest.

Check the logs to see if it happens.

              Russ,

When this happens is the DBF file still present in the database directory? Check with Windows Explorer or your favorite file manager, outside of Alpha Five.

Do you run any Alpha Five batch operations against this table?

              -- tom

My AV is MS Security Essentials. No quarantines exist. To be safe I added the dbf table to an exclusion list. In doing so I saw that the dbf file is not in the windows directory but the others are..ddd, etc. There are no operations on this table. It just disappears!!

                  Re: Active Link table Drops

You mention creating a passive link table based on the same sql source as the active link table. Are you naming both the same thing?

No... Signatures.DBF is the Active Link table and SignaturespassiveLink.dbf is the passive Link table..

Look at the ports they use.
Port 80 is the default. Check and try another. There is an option for this in both.

Even though they (teamviewer and skype) arent running?
How does an alpha desktop app use a tcp or udp port? I didn't think of this...

If you edit your connection string you should see the port assignment next to the server name.
