Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Email and T/S

Although I have 3 clients that have been on T/S for several years, email has never been an issue, until now.

My main client is currently V10.5 shadow, but will become V12 T/S.
Using Alpha's built-in email system, it dawns on me that email will be an issue as every user's email is set up to show them as the sender. I'm wondering how to handle this in T/S - anyone have any ideas?

This is how Synology NAS handles the situation.

Would it be worth creating a mail server Martin?
It would most likely need to be a separate database on TS.
That way you could have complete control.

      Martin,

can't you use email_send2() on the server? you can pass the sender's email and name into the function when you call it to generate/send the email.

Well, as it turns out I had dealt with this issue a few years ago, but forgot. And Finian alerted me of the fact.

With Terminal Services, each user has their own hkcurrentuser settings in the registry - I think the buzzword is Hive.
So, you store a profile for each user in a table of all users, and after they log on via a password, and you know who they are, you get their settings from a table containing a profile for each user and reset the email settings in the registry. This way, a user could go to any workstation and logon and their email profile would follow them.

It takes a few minutes to set it up, but is auto after that.

Martin, why is it necessary to reset the email settings in the registry? if you have a table with columns for email name, email address, and log on name, couldn't you use the log on name to find the email name and address and then use email_send2() ?

Probably, but this way if they preview a report, and use the option to email, (which several of the users do,) it will still be correct.
We are using Mandrill for emailing invoices and statements since there are so many the default email service would think we were spamming.

I am now using this in both shdaow and testing with T/S - works perfectly.
If anyone is interested, let me know.

One neat thing about this is that when a new computer is added to the LAN, or a new user to the program, you don't have to setup email - it is automatic!

                  Morning Martin and anyone else

I am indeed interested in your method for emailing - I will be needing to venture there in the next couple of weeks in similar environment.

I am far along developing an all desktop system for tracking garment production schedules (CRM style) it contains some fairly precise graphic popups like sample.
The first client is on board with the assurance that it can be accessed from their three offices around the world.
The client will predictably need MS server 2010 or similar - with Terminal Server or remote desktop.

I pose a few questions just to get advice

                  1. What would I need to get (minimal hardware)- For trial purposes setting up a ts+ (or X2, can run in a browser) server without MS 20xx.., but use a PC or NAS server from home?
                  2. When running on the big guns server, would such graphic be slow rendering? (they're small this is actual size and take 1/10th sec on local)

                    Re: Email and T/S

Well .... if you have logmein or similar - from home logon to work
then look around - when you are using any remote software to connect to another computer you are sending keystrokes and getting screen refreshes

I doubt there would be any appreciable difference between black on white and multicolor

I have had past experience with Citrix clients many (many) years back - but I didnt actually set it up - just uploaded the software to the server.
Logmein - the free version at least, is frustratinglingly poor in response & performance.
I suppose I must set up a PC with loads of memory, download trial TS and work it out.

                        Re: Email and T/S

You can, but it isn't really necessary, since the only thing you are concerned about is the graphics.
Speed/Performance - whether its Logmein, Citrix, or T/S - is more about bandwidth than anything else.
Many years ago Dan Blank set up Citrix using a dialup, and its performance was quite impressive.

Citrix is more sophisticated than T/S but costs a lot more.

If you like I will send you a link and show you one in real life action.

                          THAT would be GREAT.
I know that upon delivery the engineer tech that I mostly use, and others of course, will be more than capable.
I just have that kind of reserve one has when giving a client absolute assurance on a critical issue not having actually done it.
...Well other than in a past DOS application, set up by others with the new kid on the block back then, Citrix.
Quite honestly, its largely your posts of success, that came at the most opportune time to enable me to give that assurance.
