Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    QR Codes

How do I put a QR Code on to a letter. The Letter is attached to the table that contains the necessary data, that can easily be stored to a variable with the appropriate formatting.
    Thanks

    Re: QR Codes

How are you generating the QR code in the first place ?
Possibly you could save it as a bitmap or jpeg and store it in the database and then its easy to insert in the letter.

      Re: QR Codes

I do not currently have a method for producing the QR codes, as I thought that this may be built in Alpha, but that I was unable to find it.
Do you have a recommendation for software to produce the bitmap or JPEG?
      Thanks

        Re: QR Codes

        Hi Terry,

The only built in QR Code Generator in Alpha that I know about, is for testing a mobile app from the development local machine.

As Bob asked, not only how are you generating the QR Code but what content will it have? There are many different QR codes for different uses, you will have to know what is the purpose of the QR Code. Will it be for Inventory control or will it contain a URL?

The qr code is for a url for payments via the Barclays ping it app. The url / string launches the app with pre defined payment details.
          Thanks

            Re: QR Codes

Think at present you have a couple of choices - both fiddly and time consuming - one is to visit one of the many free websites that will generate a QR Code online which you can then download as a jpeg. The other is to buy some software ( I saw one example at 99 euros on Google) which allows you to do it on your own PC.
As far as I am aware there is no methodology built into Alpha that would generate such a code based on data in your tables.
That said there are many far cleverer people out in Alpha Land who may have found a way to automate the process.
It would be interesting for all to know what method you finally adopt.

              Re: QR Codes

I am sure I can put the data into a variable, on the clipboard or in a text file to enable another program (QR Bitmap generator) to create a file which will be used as the image in the letter.
It would have to be all automatic & in the background in order to satisfy my users.
              Thanks

                Re: QR Codes

Alpha Anywhere has the QRCode::Creator Class that will take care of creating the bitmap or png file for you. Search the documentation for qrcode for more info. There is also a built in function: qrcode_bitmap(c text [,c flag [,n width [,n height [,l flagbase64encodedwithprefix ]]]]) that can be used. Either of these will create a file. The class has lots of other methods as well.

                From the interactive window:
                Code:
                ?file.From_blob("c:\test.png",qrcode_bitmap("http://google.com","M"))
                = 1215
                Code:
                dim qr as qrcode::Creator

                ?qr.GeneratePngFile("http://google.com","C:\test.png","H")
                = .T.

                    Re: QR Codes

Using - file.From_blob("c:\test.png",qrcode_bitmap("http://google.com","M")) I have been able to create the appropriate QR Codes in files , these have been tested (embedded in a letter produced as a pdf) & seem to be working properly.
We are now seeking registration / authorisation / set up with Barclays to see if we can successfully roll out a live version.
I will keep this forum informed.
Many thanks for all the help and ditto to Bobs comment.
