Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Shortcut Title not showing

    Am in process of upgrading a old Windows 2003 Server X64 with Alpha 10.5 to Windows Server 2012 R2 x64 & Alpha 12 or Alpha Anywhere. Using Desktop Application. In v10 & Windows 2003 at the title bar on the top there is the Alpha Icon and the title that I named the shortcut. When doing the same thing on the Windows 2012 R2 server I have the Icon but do not have the title. We are using TS on both systems. I looked at how the shortcuts are made and both seem to be exact.

    Are others seeing the same problem or do I not have something set correctly.

    Jack, are you talking about the title bar of the Alpha Anywhere main window, after the shortcut opens the database and displays your startup form?

    In my own applications I usually display the path to the data in the title bar of my opening form. I do this by setting the "window_title" property of the form object in the onActivate event of the opening form. Here's an example displaying a simple character string in the title bar.

    Code:
    [SIZE=4]' in onActivate event of opening form
    this.window_title = "My Opening Form"
    this.resynch()   ' may not be necessary[/SIZE]

      It is the title bar of the main alpha anywhere window. Not the form windows. I will try your code to see if it will show in the main title bar. I have 2 separate short cuts to the same database. One I run in runtime and the other I run in the developer. I had different titles in the title bar so I knew if I was in run time or developer program.

      In playing around in the Alpha V12 I found where one function did not work but worked in V10. Turns out I had an error in the function and v10 did not care or catch it. V12 did care and would not run the function.

        I wonder if it is related to Server 2012. I am using V12, and have no problems with the title bar, set when creating the shortcut. However, I am not running on Server 2012.

          I am going to load runtime on a windows 8.1 workstation and see if it shows there. Martin, what version of windows are you using?

            7 Pro and Server 2008 R2
            be sure to create a separate shortcut for each one, using Alph's shortcut creator, and set the title to whatever value you want - like MyApp Full and MyApp Runtime

              Re: Shortcut Title not showing

              You can take further advantage of all that imposed space, filling it with useful reference information - eg

              collect variables (in this case program subject, version number, licencee name, date and username) after login and display across the title bar
              Code:
              [CODE]wintitle=subjecttext+"     "+vno+"| "+abco+"  |   "+date()+"   |   USER "+u_nam
              a5.window_title=wintitle
              [/CODE]
              I usually add A5.GET_PATH() for the actual data path.

                Re: Shortcut Title not showing

                Thanks for all of the info. Ray I like your idea since I have a form that I use to communicated staus of a number of things. I can not put that in title bar and user would be able to see all the time without having to move other forms out of the way.

                I set up a runtime on my windows 8.1 workstation, created a shortcut and started from shortcut. When program started the title I had on the shortcut showed up in the middle of the title bar. As so as I saw it was in the middle and not right next to the icon on the left corner I was betting I did not see it because it was behind the remote desktop's title bar that in in the middle. I then went to remote desktop the 2012 server, started alpha and moved the rt title bar and there was my shortcut title in the middle. Problem Solved.
