Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Printing Scripts

Silly little thing, but driving me crazy:

Whilst in the script editor, the context menu has a Tools entry. Under that entry is "Print Script". Selecting this appears to do nothing...

Also, Code --> Print or ctrl-p does nothing either.

There are times when I need to print code to compare and follow logic (I am very tactile, and sometimes need the printed page). Currently, I have to copy and paste the code into a text editor and then print it. Not a huge deal, but I am curious as to why I can't use the options available in Alpha. I may have an old version of A5DOC installed on this machine- could that be causing my grief?

    Any thoughts would be welcome,

    Chuck

Tools, Print script works as advertised here.
    There can be only one.

What program do you have in windows set to open .txt files? You might want to check that program's settings. And also in windows you might have to add commands for the default program you have assigned.

        Hey Robin,

Notepad++ is my default text editor and the program associated with .txt files. That is actually the program I paste into when I want to print a script...

What commands do you have in mind?

          Re: Printing Scripts

Chuck, I think it very unlikely that A5DOC is causing the problem.

Does this happen when editing scripts on the Code page of the Control panel?

Does this happen when editing scripts in events on forms or other layouts?

Are you trying to print Action Scripts, or xbasic code?

Do you have a "default" printer defined in Windows?

            Hi Tom,

I am trying to print from the code editor. I haven't tried to print event code. The work I am involved in is all SQL and has no forms, browses or even tables for that matter.

This is all xbasic code, no action scripting.

Yes, I have a default printer set up.

Tell us whether the sequence you're following is different from this.

              Thanks.

Hi Tom, I have tried all three of the methods you showed. All three result in the same thing; nothing. No printing dialog, no nothing...

I wonder if there is an ini file somewhere that did not get set at install- ?

                  Chuck,

It it's any consolation I see the same problem here one one machine, works fine on another.

                    Chuck,

On one machine it works fine, on the other machine I found that the script was saved instead of printed.

                      Re: Printing Scripts

Jo, that sounds like your pdf printer is the windows "default" printer.

Chuck, have you been using multiple monitors? Is it possible the print dialogs are popping up on the second monitor? If not, maybe it's time to uninstall Alpha, clean the registry, and reinstall.

                        Tom,

The script is saved as a .txt file so I think it has nothing to do with PDF.
My default printer is an EPSON-C1100 Advanced.
Wouldn't it be true that in case of a print dialog on a second monitor, the script should have been printed?

Maybe in Chuck's case the script is also saved?

                          Re: Printing Scripts

Jo, I have nothing further to offer. As illustrated in my screencast, some print options dump the script directly to the default printer, others cause a print / export / save dialog to appear. I mentioned the possibility of the dialogs popping up off screen because Chuck said he wasn't seeing any dialogs at all.

I am curious whether the machines that are misbehaving share common hardware / operating system characteristics? Maybe its time to share that information with each other ?

Also might be helpful to determine what program is "associated" with TXT files in your windows setups? In my case NOTEPAD is associated with TXT files on all my systems.

                            Tom,

I wasn't seeing any dialogs either.
It wasn't a big issue to me and I learned to live with the situation that the script was saved. This thread however triggered me to look into this issue again and remarks from Robin (#3) and Chuck (#4) and from you, pointed me into the right direction. I verified and compared map options between the two machines and found that TXT wasn't defined one the problem machine. I placed an entry in there and connected that to notepad.
Restarted the machine, tried to print a script again and it WORKED!!!!
                            Let's hope this helps Chuck.
