Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Lost all alpha login security and all on code tab

    Thanks in advance.
    This is strange.
I made a backup after work last night of the whole folder containing the app.
Today I started the app to find NO login and went straight to the work space.
All is missing on the code tab, but all other tabs seem to be there and complete.
hecked the backup and all worked well. It starts like it should.
Simple? copied the backed up app to the working folder.
    NOT good. Same behavior.
I have tried this 2 times now with same results.

Has anyone seen similar? If so, how did you repair the problem.
I am going to more extreme measures to see what is happening, but someone may have already done so.

    I am on win8.1 64bit, a5v12 dev.

Re: Lost all alpha login security and all on code tab

    Never happened to me, but...

I am guessing that the database (workspace) .alm, or .alx files were:

    1) Corrupt (bad read/write to disk?)

    2) Accidently removed from the folder (via drop and drag or deletion), and Alpha re-created new ones when you opened the .adb

Most likely, it was the .alx file that triggered this... You can argue whether better or worse that Alpha does create new replacement files, but either way it will be an issue where you need to revert to copies before you are back to normal.

You will need to go back to a backup, looking at the file size in each folder to determine where a good set of replacement files are.

Anyway, this is always a develeoper's nightmare, so you have my sympathy.

I have one solid backup. The other one is the same as the affected one. I have already tried to bring that one up and it did not work well. Hopefully it stays good.

I am working on virus checking now. All is reporting clear, but???

By the way, I know you are very seasoned with this, but I would suggest you restore all four database files as a set when restoring. (.ADB, .ALM, .ALX, and .ALB).

Sadly, Alpha makes a backup copy of sets and tables every time a development change is made, but it does not do so with the database files, where there is so much potential for loss...

I do not think CrytoLocker, or the like, targets the .alx file. It does target .DBF files, though.

Re: Lost all alpha login security and all on code tab

I did a quick test. AFTER BACKING UP, I renamed my database .Alx file. It wiped out the .ALM database support file, and all scripts and functions were gone.

Imported bitmaps were still there under the code tab, though. Just no functions, toolbars, or scripts.

            Glad your issue was resolved.

              just checked
new names are with old added like AMGS.old_alb

Is that a sign of cryptolocker??

                No. Not from my experience.

CryptoLocker works silently until it encrypts every file it sees. It does not create .old_alb, or the like.

But, I've never seen Alpha do that, either. Ever.

You say, "new names are with old added like AMGS.old_alb":

This sounds contradictory. Do you mean "old names are with old added like AMGS.old_alb"?

Re: Lost all alpha login security and all on code tab

Alpha created(I think) replacements for the files.
many of these files have the _old tag added to the end of the name. like above.

This is only affecting files opened with developer since I turned the computers on this morning(it seems)
Doing a search on that now.
This sounds contradictory. Do you mean "old names are with old added like AMGS.old_alb"?
Yes. I actually copied that in the file folder.

So far searches have only found some .png files like that.

Re: Lost all alpha login security and all on code tab

.PNG files have the same sur-naming?

Looking at the alb, alm, alx files; are they associated with any programs under control panel (The Windows one), Files and Folders?

If I look at associations for picture files, they are linked to Photoshop, so Photoshop is the "Ringmaster" for them.

It seems strange the PNG file naming mirrors the naming in the database folder... Like something other-than-Alpha did this. I take it this is not your own naming practice?

Re: Lost all alpha login security and all on code tab

There were only a few .png files.
All the rest were adb support files. I have a feeling it was an alpha glich. I deleted the newly made files and renamed the old ones. Now it is starting and running fine for those apps that were affected. Slow right now because I have virus/malware checkers running. Then, maybe the malwarebytes I ran first got it, but it was on 2 of my 3 main computers.
Will now do backups on google drive as well.

                      I think I accidentally dodged a bullet.

                        Dave,

I saw something similar once where the customer backed up his shadow copy of the database, and then mistakenly restored it to the live database folder. I think his backup was a simple zip file containing the contents of the shadow directory. Probably did not happen in your case, but thought I'd mention it because some of the symptoms (missing code page entries) are identical.

It had to be an alpha glitch Tom.
After checking everything, all the files for the adb were renamed except adb file. No other files were actually touched.
Every adb I opened did the same thing. After a reboot of computer, it was fine. I am curious what happened with alpha though.

Oh, I have done what you said, but not in a long time.

the 'old_al*' files are created when the code library is converted into a filesystem directory. see http://www.alphasoftware.com/alphafo...-huge-ALM-file
