Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Unable to connect to Northwinds DB or any access database via Alpha DAO

Good to know. (I do think that with the exception of legacy data, the .mdb thing is quite dead.)
Slow and limiting in terms of concurrency. (Much more-so than .dbf's.)

On that note: Current industry trend is to "ignore the desktop?"
Welcome back to the 70's?!?!?!..... "Thin clients and server." (almost before my time) ~ Of course now the new "thin clients" are gadgets like "smartphones" LOL and tablets etc....
IMO, I don't see how there can even be an industry without the desktop. ~ So I hope not everyone gives up on it.
(The day I can load Alpha on an android tablet and use it just like I do on windows is the day I'll change my mind on this.)

And If if the desktop does disappear, I'm thinking that it will only be on the windows side of things, and Apple will get it's chance to take over the world.

What I don't understand is why the industry has essentially (so it appears) adopted "browser based presentation technology" as "THE display/gui interface technology standard."
15 years ago, I "departed" from "web based" development because of all the issues surrounding browser compatibility. Page rendering..... Variations in how the browser engines worked with java script etc...... (And of course all the complexities of needing to draw from so many different technologies, which essentially required being a "jack of all trades.")

So here we are today with multiple interfaces running on multiple operating systems along with multiple browser engines and with different form factors (screen sizes etc.)..... All this with "boring" (IMO) and "simple" screen graphics & "challenged" battery life..... (Doesn't sound very alluring. Not to me anyways. I must be ignorant & missing something.)

I'm probably "way out in left field", and my beliefs most certainly shows my age (ignorance? wisdom?)..... Regardless, I can't help but wondering wither the industry leaders who set the standards & "drive the industry" hopped on the wrong boat. ~ I do believe that the acceptance (lack of acceptance) of Windows 8 does kind of support my position.

Okay - Cancel this! I have at last resolved the problem after all these months! I 'accidentally' came across another vendors site (http://sources.ecopath.org/trac/Ecop...ess2007Drivers) who explained that Windows 7 64 bit doesn't handle 32 bit Access files by default and to work around the problem to download and install the Access 2007 Compatibility Pack' from the Microsoft web site! On doing this seems to have resolved the issue.

Perhaps the guys at Alpha should clearly explain the potential compatibility issues with 32 bit Alpha Anywhere and 64 bit systems (and 64 bit MS Office) - or perhaps the information is there and I couldn't find it?

Anyway, hopefully if anyone else has this issue then here's the solution

    Thanks all

    Andy

  • Unable to connect to Northwinds DB or any access database via Alpha DAO

    Hi All

Hopefully someone can help me with this as I am at my wits end tryign to resolve it!

I'm having a problem defining an Alpha DAO Connection to the simple Northwinds sample database. I have been trying to resolve this for months and I am getting nowhere and it is even more annoying as I have paid for numerous training courses, and I can never get past the 'Create SQL Connection String' step, so I end up abandoning the training! I can connect to any other database, Postgress, MySQL, MSSQL

Basically, every time I create a connection string the 'Windows Installer' runs, and just hangs (screenshot attached)alpha_ADO_Install_Error_.png. The only way I can cancel it is by killing the Alpha Anywhere task in Windows (I am running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and Alpha Anywhere 3.1 version 12.3 build 2614). I have had this problem only with Alpha Anywhere, and not with Alpha V11 or previous.

I have Access 2013 installed (via Office 365), I have installed the MS Access Runtime and also the database engine for access 2010, and also done the same for Access 2007 runtime.

I can run MS Access, and load the northwinds database no problem. I can also set up a connection in Microsoft Visual Studio to Northwinds, again, with no problem, so I am pretty sure it is not an issue with Northwinds or my systems ability to open it.

In the windows event log, I get the error 'Detection of product '{90120000-0030-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}', feature 'ProductFiles' failed during request for component '{0638C49D-BB8B-4CD1-B191-050E8F325736}'' but that doesn't tell me anything - i can't even tell if the error is related!

And finally, there are no Alpha Anywhere Logs that I can find that might give me a clue as to what is happening.

I think it is definitely related to Alpha DAO as everything else works fine, so is there anything anyone can suggest I can try to problem shoot this issue?

    Thanks in advance

    Andy
