Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Bitmap Library

I am evaluating v12 for possible upgrade.

Right off the bat, I am having problems with bitmaps on buttons.

I was using the alphabit.bml in ver 10 for bitmaps on buttons in my main menu.

Lo and behold, those bitmaps either don't exist or are renamed in the alphabit.bml for ver 12.

Does anyone have an idea about copying the bitmaps from ver 10 into the ver 12 .bml?

    Thanks,

    Tom

    Tom:

    I think it's the same bitmaps year-after-year.

Your links to the images in the probably include the A5 folder name where you originally created the app.

Try copying the alphabit.* files to directories you make in the program files folders, like:

    c:\program files\A5v7
    c:\program files\a5v6, etc

Until you hit on the right path.

Or, just re-select the images on the buttons, but I think you have an extensive application that spans years of work, right?

Are you sure these aren't from an earlier library?

If you look at your 'Information Services Main Menu', then the employee list.... Is it a guy sitting with his feet up on a desk?

If so, those are from years ago. Maybe version 4, or even earlier than that.

Not trying to be funny here, but either the picture doesn't exist, or the link is pointing to a location that does not exist.

          Tom,

I'm pretty sure v10-11-12 bitmap library hasn't changed.

            Re: Bitmap Library

So, if what Peter and I think is so, was version 10 on a different machine where an older folder with an older bitmap assortment (an older alphabit.* group of 3 files) might have existed under an older path?

When I looked back to a picture of your menu system you posted in 2011, I saw images I remembered from A5, but haven't seen or used in years. If you are still using them, and if there is no way to 'import' or 'export' them, recreating the path as in message 2 may be an alternative.

              Re: Bitmap Library

I just went back into v12 to see if the bitmap libraries are truly the same, and I searched for OFFICE36@.... in the v12 bitmap library, and it WAS there, however, the bitmap and text DO NOT appear on the button even though the preview shows appropriately.

              curious-er and curious-er...

I do not have OFFICE36@... in my Alpha Five Bitmap library....

All the names in my version 12 library use the following naming format:

                $$resource.browse.sort.ascending

I still think you are seeing an echo of an older - orphaned library.

                  Craig,

This is the whole line of what is in the "define Picture" location:

                  OFFICE36@C:\Program Files\a5V12\Alphabit.bml

                  Attached is the preview...

                  Like I said, Curious!

                  Tomoffice36.jpg

                  ...sorry its so small.

                    Re: Bitmap Library

                    Tom,

Perhaps the problem is that even though the Alphabit table is supplied in v10-v12, it's not used. Type in the IW:

                    ? A5_PROMPT_FOR_IMAGENAME()

And select or look for images. You won't find Office36 or any of the others.

The Alphabit table does still include Office36, etc. It's just that they are no longer used by the system. Don't know where the current library is stored.

If you are looking for nice (free) icons, go to https://www.iconfinder.com/ and type in "clipboard". Filter on "Free" and pick the size you want, download and add to Alpha Five as a new image from the controlpanel.

How/where would one add to the bitmap library? I'm sorry for asking such a dumb question, but I don't see it.

I think Peter means right click in the code area of the control panel, and add new icons (BMP,JPG,PNG Without transparency) to the ALM file for the workspace / database.

If you want consistant transparency with PNG, you must keep it as a file on a drive.

There's nothing to be sorry for; it's not dumb. From the controlpanel's code tab select "New" and the last choice in the list is "Bitmap". I don't believe it needs to be *.bmp, but you can experiment.

                              Also, consider this:

I, like you, use graphics on my apps. I spend as much time in Photoshop as in Alpha.

If you use a lot of graphics, and want them embedded in Alpha - if for no other reason than wrapping them so they are not as easily borrowed, consider several smaller libraries, rather than one large one.

You could, say, create a library with your toolbar icons, one for your form icons, one for your "card stack' icons, etc.

This is only important with large numbers.
