Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    check if field exists on a form

    I thank you for any help in advance.
    This has probably been covered many times, but I need to test for 4 fields on a form where the code is going to be inserted in a lot of oninit form events.

    In other words
    id
    otherid
    3rdid
    4rthid
    may all be there or maybe only one and it is very time consuming to check and do manually.

    basically, I need
    if exist id then
    else
    endif

    Each of these fieldThat exist will be a part of a post into one table.

    I can get the table name, form name and all else I need.

    Re: check if field exists on a form

    list = formname.Child_Enum("r,e=this.FIELD_GET().FULLNAME_GET()" )
    will yield a crlf() delimited list in the format

    tablename->field1
    tablename->field2
    etc
    var->mydate
    There can be only one.

      Dave,

      Are you checking for fieldnames from the table structure, or are you testing for object names for the textboxes displaying field values? I ask because even though these are very different things often the latter are called "fields", too.

      Stan's code is building a list of the table field names that are bound to objects in the form, which is probably what you want.

        Re: check if field exists on a form

        I am looking for a field on the form, not table field names. I have those.
        In other words the form has id already placed on it and it has a name of joe on the for. I need to test for joe.

        I have the names of all possible used names and there are 4 of them. Some of them may not have been placed on the form. All of them may be there or 2 or 3?
        I have to test for each one and use it if it is on the form. Mostly this will be working on forms built on sets which would make no difference for what I need.

        If it is not possible, I can do them by hand.
        I hunted everywhere for this before I asked.
        This may help:
        Code:
        dim pObj as p
        pObj = topparent.this

        DIM Shared formname AS c
        formname = pObj.name()

        DIM SHARED fnum AS c = parentform:File_num.value ' is it there?
        DIM SHARED idn AS n = parentform:Id_num.value
        DIM SHARED insid AS n = parentform:Inspectid.value
        'DIM SHARED clid AS c = parentform:Clientid.value ' not on the form
        dim tble as P
        tble = table.open("aatrack",FILE_RW_SHARED)
        tble.enter_begin()
        tble.userid = var->vcuser
        tble.id_num = var->idn
        tble.filenum = var->fnum
        'tble.clientid = var->clid  ' Not on the form
        tble.inspectid = var->insid
        tble.formor = var->formname
        tble.note = "opened form "+var->formname
        tble.enter_end()
        tble.close()

          Ok,

          Dave, you can use the is_object() method of the form object to determine if an object exists. If there is an object in the form named "Clientid" then

          is_object("Clientid")

          will return true, otherwise it will return false

                Re: check if field exists on a form

                For those it might help, this is for a logging system. This particular part is for forms and is set in the on init event Simply changing the very bottom of it can make it for most anything, but is set up for my work today. Some can be added and some can be removed as needed.

                Code:
                dim pObj as p
                pObj = topparent.this
                DIM Shared formname AS c
                formname = pObj.name()

                DIM SHARED fnum AS c ' probably not the var's you need
                DIM SHARED idn AS n
                DIM SHARED insid AS n
                DIM SHARED clid AS c

                if is_object("file_num") then
                var->fnum = parentform:File_num.value
                end if
                if is_object("filenum") then
                var->fnum = parentform:filenum.value
                end if
                if is_object("id_num") then
                var->idn = parentform:Id_num.value
                end if
