Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to update a A5 Desktop Application

Please advise how to update a Desktop app. Let's say I need to add a form or update a modified table to a working desktop app which it is already used normally in the company.
    Thanks

The following applies to DBF based systems
If the updates simply relate to forms reports etc you can simply copy your development system MINUS the data files .dbf and .fpt over the existing system at a quiet time - you must remember to rebuild all the file indexes before the client uses the system again.
If the system is network optimised then ALL the shadow copies on each workstation will need updating.
It gets more complicated if you have made any changes to the data file structure.
In those instances I would tell the client the system will need to be out of action - copy their working copy to a suitable folder on your development machine - empty all the data tables on the development version and then append the data for each table from the copy you have downloaded and then when you are happy all is working ok copy the new development system back over their working copy.
There are some xbasic functions that can be used to modify file structure directly but you need a degree of skill in writing xbasic scripts and you would still have to halt the system while you did the work.
    Good luck

Luis, when I have client app where change requests are made, I have a table in the application which holds all change requests, what I did, how I did it and a link to a recovery database/workspace in case the changes fail. I also have details of the request originator an approvals.
Network optimised apps can be updated semi automatically. The user gets a message that an update is required and they do it.

As Bob says, there are Xbasic functions to manage table changes, and I tend to keep the old Forms under a Rename just in case.
Suggest you go with Bobs approach as it is sound and actions are traceable.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

If you've only modified the coding (scripts / functions), simply overwrite the ALB and ALM files but if you modified a table, you need to transfer the data to the new table and that should replace the old table. Remember to make a backup of the workspace before doing anything.
